- The Mecklenburg County DA has dropped charges in the Dec. 16, 2024, “drug turf” shootout that sent bullets into an east Charlotte church and a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools bus carrying 33 children. Prosecutors cited self-defense in dismissing the case against one of the men accused, after police arrested four people in the investigation.
The gunfire shattered bus windows, leaving some children crying and cut by broken glass as the driver—wearing a Santa hat—pulled away and called for help. The gunfire occurred in the 8800 block of East W.T. Harris Blvd., at Idlewild Road, in east Charlotte.
