- Description
- The Harrisburg Midtown Art Center is responding to accusations that it took and withheld taxes.
Its response comes after city leaders commented on HMAC's impending closure during a council meeting Tuesday night.
According to HMAC founder John Traynor, who spoke with CBS 21 News over the phone, the amusement tax, also known as the entertainment tax, hasn't been paid for roughly three years because "we are a small business struggling in a tough economy." He also said it's because the city did not respond to their attempts to discuss next steps.
However, city treasurer Dan Miller said paying the amusement tax is straightforward: it is 10% of every ticket sold and should be built into ticket prices. In other words, the tax is paid by the customer, not the venue, and is meant to be submitted to the city every month.

- Were the Amish the key to Trump's 2024 victory? Researchers examine the voting habits of PA's Amish

- Description
- After much speculation about how Pennsylvania’s Amish population may have influenced the 2024 presidential election, researchers at Elizabethtown College are measuring the Amish vote in Lancaster County.
Elizabethtown College’s Steven Nolt and Kyle Kopko published Jan. 29 a research note titled “Measuring the Amish Vote in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, 2024” in the Journal of Plain Anabaptist Communities, which sought to investigate and address media claims that Amish voters played a “decisive” role in President Donald Trump's 2024 win.
The research shows that 2024 saw the highest number of registered Amish voters and eligible Amish voters since 2004—though voter turnout ended up being lower than the 2020 election. In 2020, around 18.17% of eligible Amish voters in Lancaster County hit the polls, compared to a voter turnout of 14.68% in 2024.

The incident occurred Tuesday at Fulton Elementary School. The child, Freddy, who is nonverbal and on the autism spectrum, was discovered without a coat and running near active traffic before being helped by a passerby.
Freddy’s mother, Nelly, said she was devastated to learn her son had wandered away from school — and even more upset that she wasn't notified directly by school officials.
“How does a kid just not get noticed leaving a building?” she asked. “How did my son get from that classroom, unnoticed, down a flight of stairs, outside without an adult on him?”

- No new funding for rape crisis centers in Governor Shapiro's budget proposal: advocates sound alarm

- Description
- Advocates for sexual assault survivors are calling for more action from the governor and lawmakers as they start budget negotiations.
The Pennsylvania Coalition to Advance Respect (PCAR), which supports 47 rape crisis centers across Pennsylvania, said it hasn't seen an increase in funding in years and is worried this year won't change.
Without added funding, PCAR's public policy director, Gabriella Romeo, said victims of sexual assault may be more likely to self-harm, be revictimized, and go through the horrible tragedy all by themselves.
"It hurts. We, I mean, my initial reaction is disappointment," Romeo said.
Rape crisis centers, which provide counseling, legal help, and medical advocacy at no cost to victims, are asking for more than $25 million in this year's budget.

- Description
- The Guthrie Memorial Library in Hanover has temporarily closed its doors after a sprinkler malfunction caused flooding on Sunday night.
A police officer on patrol heard the fire alarm go off inside the library, prompting an investigation.
"We found out there was no fire, but the sprinkler system had been activated. Turned out it was just one sprinkler," said AJ Grimm, public works director for Hanover Borough.
The water from the sprinkler damaged the ceiling, lights, walls, carpets, and spread to multiple floors. Despite the extent of the flooding, Grimm said, "Fortunately, we didn't have much of any property damage. There were a few books that may have been slightly damaged, but luckily we escaped unscathed for most of it because of the quick reaction of the police and fire department involved here."

The lawsuit was filed Monday by a husband and wife who share a common property boundary with the governor’s Abington residence and centers around a shared property line.

He also said officers will not be dissuaded from their mission -- even in the face of intimidation from the public.
“The family of ICE personnel have been made to feel unsafe in their homes,” he said.
Lyons said even his own family has faced harassment. But he warned that those trying to intimidate ICE officers “will fail.”
