- In the detective’s unit, tarps are standard issue. One never knows when a cell from the jail might overflow and sewage might drip onto their heads or on to case files.
“I’ve been here 30 years, it’s been the same office,” said Erik Francis, chief deputy of investigations and support services. “Nothing has really changed and that’s not an exaggeration… You absolutely just get used to the conditions.”
Whatcom County Sheriff Donnell “Tank” Tanksley says that the Sheriff’s Office was never meant to be an office when the current jail was built in the 1980s.
“The reality is that this space was built as a storage area,” he said. “When this building was built, it was gravel down here, someone made a decision, hey, you know, let's make this a sheriff's office space.”

Before October 2020, Anacortes had a bowling alley within city limits that had opened in 1904. The community’s rich bowling history spilled into Anacortes High School when it founded a girls bowling team around 2000.
But San Juan Lanes closed in October 2020, leaving the Seahawks the only team in the conference without an alley in their town.

The Nelsons and their two daughters hatch 2,000–3,000 chicks per year at their private Bellingham farm, where they also grow organic produce and keep Kunekune pigs. Their birds are raised around fresh air and nutrient-rich pasture crops, never pesticides and antibiotics.
