- Vice President JD Vance on Monday called the first round of negotiations with Iranian leaders in Switzerland "very productive" and said they created a "good foundation for a successful final deal" to end the war that began in late February.
"This is laying a foundation for what could be a truly transformed Middle East," he told reporters at Emmen Military Air Base before flying back to the U.S. "But we haven't built the house yet. We're going to have to keep on building and that's what we'll do."
The vice president said the talks resulted in a mechanism to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open, the establishment of a working group including Lebanon to address fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, and a commitment from Iran to invite U.N. inspectors to its nuclear sites.

"The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question. And I accept that answer with good grace," he said in a statement outside No. 10 Downing Street.

"Countries don't give up the right of self-defense. Israel doesn't give up the right of self-defense if Hezbollah fires rockets or drones at Israel. The Iranians don't give up their right of self-defense in their country," he said at a briefing. "But we do expect that as part of the final deal they are not going to be able to build the kind of missiles that can broadly threaten the entire world."
U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, said at the start of the war that eliminating Iran's ballistic missile program was a key objective.
"You can't tell a country, whether Israel or Iran, that they're not allowed to have any self-defense," the vice president said.
