Al dacht Edouard Ducpétiaux tweehonderd jaar geleden net het tegenovergestelde.

- Op de website van Vivaqua is te zien hoe hard het water dat uit de kranen stroomt per straat is. Die hardheid geeft aan hoeveel kalk en magnesium er in het water zitten. Voor onze redactie op het Flageyplein is dat 23 Franse graden, de eenheid die gebruikt wordt om de waterhardheid weer te geven. Dat is best hoog, en op verschillende plekken in Brussel kan dat cijfer wat lager of net nog hoger liggen.

Hier wordt het afval uit de witte vuilniszakken verbrand. Door de ligging en de vorm van het gebouw heeft het zelfs iets weg van een gigantische stoomboot. Zeker wanneer rookwolken de honderd meter hoge schouw verlaten. Maar hoe schadelijk is die rook?

- Aan de congreskolom en het graf van de onbekende soldaat worden momenteel nieuwe woningen gebouwd. 'Kom hier wonen met een prachtig uitzicht over de stad' staat te lezen op de grote borden aan de werf. Tussen de Pachecolaan en het platform achter het Congresplein is er inderdaad een hoogteverschil van honderd meter. Al werd dat uitzicht vroeger op een heel andere wijze benut. En ja hoor, ook dit kan toegevoegd worden aan het lijstje 'Brusselse architecturale parels en wijken die verdwenen in de jaren 1960'.
