- The Windbreak Café in Wasilla is a place where you can order hash browns, French toast, bacon and other down home food. It’s also where we sat down with Alaska’s governor-elect, Mike Dunleavy – who insisted on the restaurant as the location for our first interview since the election.
He says the Windbreak Café is a place where he feels comfortable -- and where he met with members of his campaign to strategize about the race.
Dunleavy’s wife, Rose, also joined us – so we also got a chance to find out more about Alaska’s next First Lady.
Rose Dunleavy says she plans to keep her job as an Alaska Airlines customer service agent for now. She told us she wants to find out how much time her First Lady duties will require -- and if it’s too demanding to juggle both, she’ll reconsider.
Here are some highlights from this week’s program:

- Description
- On election night, we made a quick stop at a downtown Anchorage polling place to ask voters about the emotions they experienced as they cast their ballots.
Some said they felt a mixture of fear and hope, while others, a sense of inclusion – that through their vote, they had a voice.
While campaigns are divisive, elections are a ritual that brings us together as a community and a country, because we agree in advance to honor the collective decision of the voters.
Now the process of honoring the vote begins.
In the end, the races for governor and U.S. House were not as close as the polls projected. Mike Dunleavy cruised to victory as the next governor. And Don Young returns to the U.S. House, to serve in his 24th term. Republicans not only won Alaska’s top jobs, but a majority in both the House and the Senate.
We’ve invited two veteran state...

- Description
- Our goal: to capture the peak of the Bristol Bay sockeye run. We were told to show up in Naknek in the first week of July, and we would see plenty of action.
The only problem was – no one told the fish. As it turned out, the run was three weeks late. People told us we should have gone to the Nushagak River, where the salmon were hitting the nets hard.
However, we soon discovered it was actually a great time to be in Naknek, because people had time to talk with us – to share their stories about fishing in Bristol Bay, as well as their hopes and dreams. If they had been racing to pick fish from their nets, our cameras and microphones would probably have gotten in the way.
Instead, we took in the fresh air of the Naknek beach, enjoyed the scenery and visited with setnetters. In some ways, it was like being part of a big family reunion, because many of these setnet families have worked together for generations. And while the children of these or...

- This week on Frontiers, we look at efforts to breathe new life into Alaska Native languages. There are about twenty of them – and what better place to explore this than the First Alaskans Institute’s Elders and Youth Conference?
Every afternoon you could hear sounds of languages like Tlingit, Dena’ina, Unangam Tunuu, Inupiat and Sugpiaq in sessions that were packed with students, ready to learn new words and phrases – many from communities with a dwindling number of fluent speakers.
Will this ultimately stop the language erosion that linguists say threatens almost all of Alaska Native languages with extinction by the end of the century?
Tristan Madros, one of the keynote speakers for the conference, talked about a prophecy from a medicine man he had heard as a child – that Native languages would go to sleep, and when people were ready, would be reawakened.
So was this year’s Elders and Youth Conference the awakening med...

- Two longtime Alaska political operatives both warn voters to expect an October surprise in the governor’s race.
Art Hackney and Ivan Moore say they’re not sure what form this surprise will take, but say it’s possible it could cut into Dunleavy’s substantial lead in the polls.
Hackney is a longtime consultant for conservative candidates that have included Ted Stevens and Don Young. Moore is a public opinion researcher and pollster who has surveyed Alaskans since the 1990’s.
This interview occurred after we recorded Frontiers on Friday. On the show, we discussed an Ivan Moore poll released on Oct. 8th, which ranked Dunleavy in first place with 46.5 percent, ahead of Governor Bill Walker by almost 20 points.
Walker polled at 27 percent and Democrat Mark Begich at about 23%.
When we finished recording the show, we continued the conversation with a discussion about the potential for what campaign strategi...

- We’ve got quite a Frontiers road trip for you this week, as we cruise across Alaska’s quirky political landscape.
The three-way governor’s race is a great opportunity to explore why it’s hard to get a pulse on Alaskan voters.
Republicans may be the largest political party in our state, but the biggest block of voters are registered as undeclared or nonpartisan. I call them “independent critters,” because they tend to vote across party lines, depending on the candidate and the issues.
Our guides on this political tour are two of the best – Art Hackney and Ivan Moore.
Art got his start in Alaska politics on the streets of Fairbanks, passing out campaign literature for his dad, Glenn Hackney, who was elected to the state legislature in the 1970’s. Since then, he’s logged almost 40 years of advising conservative candidates – among them, Ted Stevens and Don Young.

I had a chance to cross paths with Mark this summer at the Bristol Bay Fly Fishing Academy, held at the Bear Trail Lodge in King Salmon.
The owner of the lodge, Nancy Morris Lyon, had invited him to give a presentation to her students, to expose them to a skill they could incorporate into a career as a sport fishing guide.
Mark does both – takes fly fishers out on trips to catch salmon, but he also leads photography expeditions into places like Katmai. Also in his spare time, he works on films about wildlife for the National Park Service, National Geographic and Curiosity Stream. Busy guy.

- Only a generation ago, teachers tried to shame Alaska Native children into silence.
In this week’s Frontiers, Marie Rexford of Kaktovik recalls how teachers slapped her hand with a ruler for speaking in Inupiat.
David Katzeek, a Tlingit educator now living in Juneau, remembers how a teacher would force children to stretch out their arms and hold heavy rocks in each hand when they were caught speaking in their Native language.
Katzeek, now 72, was 8 years old at the time. He says he complied with the teacher’s directive, because he was taught by his elders to be respectful.
He coped by making a game out of holding the rocks and using his imagination to escape.
Thanks to those who endured the rocks and the rulers, Native languages are still here – and elders today are helping to mend the tattered tapestry of Alaska Native languages.
Today there are about twenty Native languages, but most have undergone se...
