- A Camarillo, California company called Sabrewing Aircraft, Inc. was the buzz at the Alaska Air Carriers Association Convention this year.
It’s where Sabrewing’s CEO and co-founder, Ed De Reyes, announced a joint venture with a tribal government to develop the Rhaegal and the Wyvern, heavy-duty drones designed to carry air cargo to some of Alaska’s most remote communities.
The autonomous aircraft are named after dragons in the popular TV series, Game of Thrones. The Rhaegal, designed to be about the size of a large pick-up truck, would carry about 800 pounds of cargo. DeReyes says the larger Wyvern, would be about the size of a Fed Ex delivery truck and would carry more than 4,000 pounds. But he says, to date, only a small-scale model of the Rhaegal has actually been flown.
De Reyes says the agreement is historic, especially if it leads to FAA certification, key to developing the aircraft for commercial use.

Mitch Seavey has run the Iditarod trail more times then Nic or Joar combined. He was born into the sport, with his father Dan Seavey running the first Iditarod in 1973. He broke the speed record in 2017; finishing in 8 days, 3 hours, and 40 minutes.

- Editor's note: Another version of this video included comments made after the formal interview concluded. Those comments have been edited out at the request of the governor's office.
Nearly two weeks after rolling out his plan to close a $1.6 billion budget gap, Gov. Mike Dunleavy is holding firm on a proposal that features deep cuts to public education, Medicaid and the University of Alaska, plus the shuttering of the Alaska Marine Highway System and efforts to repeal certain local taxing authorities.
Meanwhile, the Senate and House Finance committees have begun scrutinizing Dunleavy’s plan, sections of which some lawmakers have called, “short sighted.”
Dunleavy sat down with KTVA's political correspondent Steve Quinn on Tuesday morning to discuss various segments of his budget and initial responses from community and business leaders.

- Normally when we put out a request on Facebook for comments on a subject, the posts trickle in. But the response from viewers to Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s budget cuts was fast and heavy. In less than two days, I received more than a 100 comments. Some of these postings wound-up in this week’s Frontiers program, which looks at the proposed budget’s economic impact on Alaska.
We also received some long and thoughtful emails, which you can find below
Here are some of this week’s Frontiers highlights:
• To cut or not to cut? What better place to talk about the impact of budget cuts than a barbershop or salon, where you can find lots of cutting going on and no shortage of opinions.
• Economic Shockwaves: We sit down with three state budget experts – Cheryl Frasca, Pat Galvin and Gunnar Knapp. Frasca was budget director under Gov. Frank Murkowski. Galvin was Revenue Commissioner under Sarah Palin and Sean Parnell. Knapp is an ec...

- Imagine for a moment that there are only six people left in all the world with whom you can converse with -- that your homeland had been overwhelmed with another language, used to oppress you.
That’s the relationship St. Paul Island has had with English. Elders say they were punished in school for speaking their language, Unangam Tunuu – the same elders who survived harsh treatment by the U.S. Government, who exploited their labor to harvest seals for the fur trade.
As the number of fluent speakers on the island dwindled, there were fears the language would die with them. But at the St. Paul Island school, children are speaking Unangam Tunuu.
Usually there are no second chances for dying languages, but St. Paul Island has had success with the “Where Are Your Keys?” program, which emphasizes conversation over memorizing words. It also incorporates American Sign Language.
The program was developed by Evan Gardner, an O...

- The story of Alaska food has some deep roots in places like Port Alsworth, a town of about 200 on the eastern shores of Lake Clark. Today, it’s part of the Lake Clark National Park and Preserve — about an hour’s flight southwest of Anchorage.
The community was originally homesteaded by a bush pilot, Leon “Babe” Alsworth and his wife, Mary.
To feed their growing family, they planted a garden right next to a gravel airstrip, where they ran an air taxi operation, which later grew into a lodge and flightseeing business.
That was almost 70 years ago.

- Illegal. Probably not something most people think of when they think seaweed. It doesn’t matter if it’s growing on a rock or simply washed up on a beach. Harvesting without a permit in a non-subsistence area could land you a court date.
The restriction first went into effect about 15 years ago, when Alaska Department of Fish and Game officials say there was a perceived overharvest of rockweed in Seward.
But marine biologists like Brian Ulaski are studying the coast to see if those regulations are ready to change.

- In this episode of Frontiers, we look at the birth of Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s administration – his first hours as governor, spent above the Arctic Circle in Kotzebue and Noorvik.
Originally, Dunleavy planned to fly to Kotzebue, then travel to Noorvik by snow machine -- to be sworn-in at noon, December 3rd, the first Monday in December – satisfying the Alaska Constitution’s requirements for a the start of a governor’s term – and also making history by taking the oath of office in an unprecedented location.
But the magnitude 7 earthquake, which rocked Southcentral Alaska changed those plans. This week’s show follows all the twists and turns in what still turned out to be a historic inauguration. Here are the highlights.
• A day of surprises: KTVA’s Liz Raines follows how two communities – Kotzebue and Noorvik – adapted to a day of many changes.

We also sat down with Gov. Walker and First Lady Donna Walker at the Governor’s House. They had a fire crackling when we arrived. A portrait of William Henry Seward hangs above the fireplace – in the backdrop, as the Walkers looked back on the past four years.
Bill Walker seemed very much at peace with the transition – more open and less guarded than I’ve seen him in years. At times Donna Walker’s eyes were moist, as she shared how she felt about her husband’s decision to end his campaign.
Walker says he wonders what his next move will be – that a governor accumulates so much knowledge and expertise. So now, the next step will be the figure out how to put his experience to good use.
