- Sign language is used as a means of communicating by millions of people worldwide, particularly those who are deaf.
More than 360 million people have disabling hearing loss, and according to the World Health Organization (WHO) this is expected to rise to 700 million people by 2050.
People have been using different variations of sign language around the world for centuries but it is only in the last 50 years signing has been considered an official language in many countries.
To mark International Day of Sign Languages here’s a handful of things you might not have considered about sign language.

- Stephanie is concerned about the impact burning fossil fuels has on climate change.
But her dad Andrew is a senior employee at BP and worked in the oil industry for more than 20 years.
The 13-year-old from Surrey questions: “Does this mean he doesn’t care about my future? Does this mean by default that I don’t care about the planet?”
Climate change is a hot topic at home. While Stephanie worries about the Earth's future, she hopes BP's sustainability commitments could make her dad part of the solution.

- Jake, Elliott and Jed love to skateboard but are fed up of having to do it on the streets,
So they’ve put their business hats on, begun talking to local organisations for funding and started a social media campaign to get a skate park built near their homes in Swansea.
And their efforts to get more facilities in young people in their area got noticed by the Children’s Commissioner for Wales who has called on all councils to do more to include children and young people in the democratic process.
Hopefully we’ll get to see how their campaigning progresses later in the year – watch this space!

- Callum's suffered with a stutter since the age of seven.
He spent most of his life as a "walking thesaurus", thinking of words he could use to replace the ones he couldn't say.
From making orders in restaurants, to lessons in school and even saying his own name - Callum says his stutter used to affect "every aspect of my life".
That was until he discovered a group which helped him take control of his speech and inspired him to help others struggling in the same way all over the world.
