- Nearly 200 families experiencing homelessness are waiting for a spot to open at the state’s largest provider for homeless families, and leaders say they are losing hope.
Even as triple-digit temperatures fade in the Valley, advocates say the need is growing and the system is struggling to keep up.
City and county programs funded with tax dollars, like the Arizona Housing Hub, are working to place families, but the backlog is large. Families could wait more than six weeks for housing placement.
For those on day one of homelessness after a missed paycheck or eviction with nowhere to go, nonprofits are stepping in with an unconventional approach — finding nightly shelter in hotels across the Valley.

Police say the boy was hit by his family’s SUV in the driveway as the family prepared to leave Friday morning. He was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, and investigators say impairment and criminal conduct have been ruled out. Kids and Car Safety says children are struck by vehicles 110 times a week nationwide when drivers cannot see them. The incidents often happen in driveways and parking lots, usually involving a child and someone the child knows. Our blind-spot test found that the area a driver cannot see can grow dramatically between a compact SUV and a full-size truck — even with cameras.
