- Description
- Belgium’s Federal Parliament just passed a divisive law that allows police to raid people’s homes for migration control. Now they can enter private homes, including those hosting undocumented migrants, between 5am and 9pm and search for identity documents – even if children are present.
Belgium traditionally shows strong solidarity towards migrant communities, and this ‘home raids’ law will discourage them from doing so in the future. No one should be scapegoated for soaring costs of living and economic insecurity. The law must be immediately reversed.

Our thoughts are with his wife, family and friends. The best way to honour him is to carry on the fight he believed in. It should appal us all that the scourge of violence against women and girls continues, and Governments must do far more to end it.

In the context of systemic racism, the chant is based on the racist prejudice that migrants, refugees and asylum seekers - mostly racialized people in Europe - do not belong in the EU. This incident followed the vote on the Return Regulation, a law that will vastly expand the EU's detention and deportation of undocumented people.
For years, European leaders have scapegoated migrants, refugees and asylum seekers to distract from their own failures to deal with the consequences of cuts to public services, the housing crisis and the rising cost of living. President Roberta Metsola’s condemnation of this is welcome but not enough. - Description
- Marches in full swing across South Africa today, on the deadline given by anti-migrant group March for March, are a result of the country's failing immigration systems that leave thousands of people undocumented and living in limbo, including refugees and asylum seekers.
This together with persistent inequalities and socioeconomic exclusion rooted in the legacies of apartheid go far beyond bureaucracy, feeding public frustration and creating fertile ground for misinformation. No one should be scapegoated as a result of governmental failures.

- Iranian authorities must immediately quash the convictions in mid-June of singer Parastoo Ahmadi and eight other musicians who were each sentenced to 74 lashes, a two-year travel ban and two-year ban on artistic activities. Their sentences relate to a live-streamed 2024 concert in Qom province where Parastoo Ahmadi performed unveiled in a sleeveless dress. The video went viral, gaining millions of views. Flogging constitutes cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment, and violates the absolute prohibition on torture and other ill-treatment. Iranian authorities must abolish compulsory veiling and corporal punishment and end the criminalization of freedom of expression.

- The EU and its member states’ plans to deport Afghan nationals are a disgrace.
We rallied outside the EU Commission headquarters to spread the message that Afghanistan cannot be considered a safe country. Its dire human rights situation, deepening humanitarian crisis and systemic oppression of women and girls, make deportation a dangerous move and ignore the EU’s own legal obligations. Anyone deported back to the country faces real and well-documented risks to their safety and rights.
The Taliban must be held accountable for their widespread and systematic human rights abuses.
