- Ibraheem Yazeed, 36, was sentenced to life in prison in the 2019 shooting death of 19-year-old Aniah Blanchard.
A jury convicted Yazeed of felony murder and murder in March. He was sentenced to two life terms with the possibility of parole.
Blanchard, a Southern Union College student from Homewood, was reported missing in October 2019. The vehicle she was last seen in was recovered. Her cell phone never was.
The case drew national attention and led to state laws expanding the list of criminal offenses ineligible for bail, such as Aniah’s Law in Alabama.
Aniah’s mother, Angela Haley Harris, launched Aniah’s Heart to teach young people about safety and says her advocacy isn’t stopping.
Harris initially told reporters outside the courthouse she was nervous of what could happen: “I’m happy that justice was served.”

- A tense day at the Alabama State House on May 6 ended abruptly when a severe storm caused flooding and the evacuation of the building.
The Alabama Senate convened at 4 p.m. to debate one of two bills lawmakers will consider during the special session.
Democrats opposed the bill and were offering amendments.
Senate rules allow extended debate, and it could have gone on for hours.
But when an alarm rang out in the State House after flooding in the lower part of the building and the parking lot, senators moved quickly to finish their business in the seventh-floor chamber.
Senators answered the roll call for a vote over the sound of the alarm. The Republican majority passed SB1 by Sen. Chris Elliott, R-Baldwin County, by a vote of 26-7 over the opposition from Democrats.
The bill passed, SB1, would allow the special primary to include two state Senate seats representing the Montgomery area. The Legislature’s map for t...

- A bombshell Supreme Court ruling April 29, focused on Louisiana congressional districts, could change Alabama’s voting maps and the balance of power in Congress -- but not immediately.
In Louisiana v. Callais, the Supreme Court decided that the state should not have drawn two majority-Black districts. Justices agreed that Louisiana white voters were discriminated against. Immediately after the decision, Alabama Republicans began calling for an effort to redraw maps in a way that would send as many as nine Republicans to Congress.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said Friday that she would call a special session in an effort to redraw the state’s congressional and legislative maps.
The decision reversed her earlier statement that she would wait for the Supreme Court to settle the state’s pending legal arguments. Alabama is currently enjoined by the courts from changing its congressional districts before 2030.

- Kay Ivey was one execution away from setting a record among Alabama governors in the modern era of the death penalty. But instead she chose to spare a man’s life, setting an entirely different record in the state.
There are only three known instances of a governor granting clemency to someone on death row in Alabama. Ivey, a Republican, is now responsible for two of them, as she commuted the death sentence of Charles Lee “Sonny” Burton.
Nationwide, clemency is “extremely rare,” according to the Death Penalty Information Center, with less than 1% of people on death row having their sentences commuted. Meanwhile, the use of the death penalty in states where it’s legal has “risen sharply” - 2025 had more executions than any year since 2009.
