- Two members of a group of teachers protesting against Chambers County’s school consolidation plan were arrested for disorderly conduct at a school board meeting Wednesday evening.
A live video shared to Facebook shows two Valley police officers preparing to arrest Valley High teacher Tytianna Smith and another LTAD member who held flyers with a 1960s mugshot of late Representative John Lewis. The flyers read, “Be Hopeful. Be Optimistic” and “Get in Good Trouble.”
Smith is a leader of LaFayette Teachers Against Displacement, a group that’s been protesting a judge’s recent decision to allow the board to close and merge two high schools. As part of a decades-old desegregation order, the district will close majority-Black LaFayette High and majority-white Valley High to build a new, consolidated high school in the Valley community. McWhorter was 18 at the time of the shooting death of Wiliams Sr., the father of one of his friends, and he’s been on Alabama Death Row since 1994 after a jury voted 10-2 for him to die. He was 19 when, on Friday the 13th, he was sent to William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore where Alabama Death Row is housed and he will soon face execution.

This video was provided in the aftermath of the shooting by SafetyVid.org. The incident also led to massive traffic backups during rush hour.
Authorities say a group was traveling together when they spotted what they believed was their vehicle, which had been stolen in another city.
They followed the group in the vehicle, and eventually a shootout occurred.
At least two of those taken to UAB for treatment had life-threatening injuries.
Birmingham officers say everyone in the hospital is currently considered a suspect, but the investigation is ongoing.

- A stolen car led to a shootout between two groups of people on Interstate 59 southbound in Birmingham during rush hour traffic left four people injured and hundreds stuck in traffic, police said.
Multiple calls started coming into Birmingham’s 911 center about 4:40 p.m.
One of the callers said a person was on the ground outside of a vehicle with a gunshot wound, according to police radio traffic.
That location is on I-59 southbound near Bush Boulevard. A second victim was then also found nearby on the interstate.

- In an emotionally charged hearing in Birmingham’s federal court Wednesday morning, it was revealed Joran van der Sloot had confessed to killing Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway in Aruba in 2005.
The Dutch national from Aruba was long suspected in the disappearance and death and pleaded guilty today to the extortion of Natalee’s mother, Beth. He waived his right to appeal.
Van der Sloot, 36, received a 20-year sentence on each of the two convictions. Those sentences will be served concurrently with each other and also concurrently with his sentence in Peru.

- In 2019, two Huntsville Police officers—Krista McCabe and Cameron Perillat arrested Roland Edger, a Huntsville mechanic, who was with his stepson, Justin Nuby. The location was the parking lot of Progressive Union Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville. After arresting Edger, McCabe booked him in jail. The police received a 911 from the church's security the church's security guard called 911. "I have two Hispanic males messing with an employee's car that was left on the lot," he said on the call.
After the city dropped the charge of obstruction against Edger, he sued in the federal district court, which dismissed the suit after judging that the officers had qualified immunity. He appealed the ruling and this week the federal appeals court ruled that there was no basis for the officer arresting him, rejected the qualified immunity claim, and sent the case back to the district court.

On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at around 12:55 p.m., South Precinct officers were dispatched on a report of a Disorderly Person in Underwood Park, located at 2621 10th Avenue South. They encountered an adult male victim who reported being spit on by a black male wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Theodore Williams.
While collecting information for a report, two BPD Officers spotted Theodore Williams on 10th Avenue South. Mr. Williams fled on foot upon seeing the officers. He threatened physical assault on the officers, who unsuccessfully attempted to use a taser.
