- Alabama has prosecuted 192 pregnant women for drug use while pregnant in just the last two years. According to Pregnancy Justice, a nonprofit defending pregnant people's rights, that's nearly half of all similar cases nationwide.
The total across 16 states was 412 prosecutions, but Alabama stands out with its approach.
Prosecutions in Alabama were largely concentrated in a handful of counties.
Etowah County led with 16 cases, followed by Cullman County with 11, and Morgan County with 8.
Alabama is one of only three states where the Supreme Court allows child abuse laws to be applied during pregnancy.
It's also the only state that legally defines an embryo as a child.
Sussman said Pregnancy Justice has encountered cases in the state where women were charged and did not know they were pregnant.

The impact is expected to be felt the most at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, home to 42,000 civilian military and contract employees and 800 uniformed personnel.
Redstone’s website said it would not be updated due to a lapse in appropriations “except in cases of life, health and safety information.”
According to a Department of War directive issued before the shutdown, employees whose compensation comes from sources other than annual appropriations are still expected to work, as would personnel whose jobs are necessary to protect life and property.
Nationally, those numbers included 182,684 employees whose jobs were funded elsewhere, and 223,889 to protect life and property.

In the last decade, no federal cases have been filed against employers in Alabama for employing undocumented immigrants, according to federal court records.
AL.com requested data from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement about employer investigations, but did not immediately receive the information. A spokesperson for the agency said it is investigating employers.
An estimated 2,000 people were arrested and sent into deportation proceedings in Alabama between January and June 2025, roughly doubling arrest rates from 2024.
Federal data between 2004 and 2019 shows most employers who violate immigration law are held accountable through fees and fines but not through the courts.

Space Command is a Combatant Command or a high-level group typically made up of different military branches that are responsible for specific geographic areas.
Space Command’s geographic coverage is the Karman line, the internationally recognized point where Earth’s atmosphere ends and outer space begins, to the moon and beyond.
The U.S. Space Force is the military service responsible for organizing, training, and equipping the majority of forces for U.S. Space Command and the other unified combatant commands around the world.
