- Just over a year ago, Tavion Tapscott was in a Fresno County courtroom because a domestic violence protection order was taken out against him.
On Wednesday, he was sentenced for killing the woman who took out that order, Breaja Jones.
Jones was his former partner and the mother of his child.
Prosecutors say he had gone to her home to pick up some items, there was an argument, and he shot her.
Tapscott was fairly certain of his fate when he walked into court because there was a plea deal.
The prosecutor said it was Jones' mother who asked for the deal, she was hoping to give Tapscott the chance to spend less time in jail.
The attorneys met and agreed he'd plead guilty to second-degree murder with a gun enhancement, leading to a 25 years to life sentence.

Wyland Gomes was 10 years old when he was shot to death by his father, Victor, who then turned the gun on himself.
Victor never should have had the weapon, as there was a restraining order against him.
Attorney Joseph Alioto says the Kings County Superior Court waited around eight months before transmitting that order, which allowed Victor to buy a gun during that time.
Assemblymember Catherine Stefani has introduced AB 1363, called "Wyland's Law."
It would require county courts to keep records showing they followed through on sending protective orders to the Department of Justice.
The Kings County court told Action News it cannot comment on the matter.
