- An Omaha man accused of stabbing his mother to death has been found not responsible by reason of insanity — acquitted on all counts, including murder.
Court records show Nicholas Saitta was arrested last June after deputies found his mother with stab wounds to her neck. She later died at the hospital.
At the time of his arrest, Saitta allegedly told investigators he had stabbed her because he was hearing voices — "they were telling me to." He also had self-inflicted injuries and was armed with a knife when taken into custody.

- Special Olympics Nebraska opened its annual games at DJ Sokol Arena at Creighton University Thursday — and for the 700 athletes who compete each year, it's about far more than sports.
For Leslie Blank and Michael Graham, the five-hour drive from McCook to Omaha is one of the highlights of their year. But this year carries extra weight — their beloved coach, Lynne Kinne, passed away suddenly in March. It's the first Special Olympics without her.
"There's no quitting. Especially if I quit, she would not be happy." — Michael Graham
Athletes will compete over the next several days in volleyball, swimming, track and field, and gymnastics — staying in the dorms at Creighton University during the event.

- Supreme Court Rules Against Prisoner's Compassionate Release in 8-1 Decision

- Description
- The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8-1 against a New York man serving a life sentence who had been granted compassionate release — finding that the statute used to vacate his sentence doesn't apply to his case.
In Fernandez v. United States, justices ruled that Joe Fernandez should have challenged his sentence through a habeas corpus appeal rather than compassionate release. Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote the majority opinion, stating that "the supposed invalidity of a conviction is not among the 'extraordinary and compelling reasons' that justify compassionate release."
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was the lone dissent, arguing the ruling limits the flexibility of the compassionate release statute — which she said was designed by Congress to give courts discretion in ensuring just treatment of defendants.
Washington Correspondent Caitrin Assaf reports.

- This week's First Alert 6 Athlete of the Week is Gretna boys soccer junior Alex Sowinski — the set-piece specialist who helped the Dragons win the Class B state championship with an 8-2 victory over Lexington.
Sowinski scored twice on set pieces in the title game and four times off set pieces throughout the state tournament, finishing the season with 15 goals overall. It's Gretna's first state title since 2022 and the program's fourth in history.
The story gets even better — Sowinski's dad and brother both won state titles in their junior years. He wore the same No. 17 jersey as his brother while doing it.
Sowinski trained in Spain at TOVO Academy, played MLS Next soccer in New Hampshire, and moved back to Gretna just this past January — in time to lead the Dragons to a championship.

- Auburn Farmers Face Years of Recovery After Storms Wash Away Topsoil

- Description
- Farmers near Auburn, Nebraska say they're facing years of recovery after last week's storms dumped six to 10 inches of rain over a three-day span across southeast Nebraska — washing away feet of nutrient-rich topsoil from corn and soybean fields.
Nemaha County farmer Patrick Collins says the dry, uncompacted soil made erosion even worse during the flash flooding, leaving crops with exposed roots and nothing to feed on. One farmer in the area estimated up to eight percent of crop yields are already gone.
"Gonna take years to bring back," Collins said.
First Alert 6 Senior Chief Meteorologist Rusty Lord says the region went from drought conditions to extreme rainfall in a very short window — a combination that accelerated the damage.

- A former AmericInn hotel employee has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for sex trafficking minors in Omaha.
Kavankumar Patel, 27, was sentenced Tuesday in federal court on two counts of sex trafficking of a minor. Senior U.S. District Judge Joseph Bataillon handed down the sentence. There is no parole in the federal system.
Patel, who was in the country illegally from India, is expected to be deported after his release. He will also serve five years of supervised release.
Investigators say Patel used money from the hotel till to pay traffickers to have sex with one of the minor victims. Two girls had been brought to the hotel from out of state and were being sold for commercial sex. Hotel employees allowed the traffickers and minors to remain at the property for multiple days.
The case was investigated by the Homeland Security Task Force and the Omaha Police Department.

Trump's Face on a $250 Bill? Treasury Says It Needs Congress to Make It Happen
DESCRIPTION
The Trump administration has been in talks about putting President Trump's face on a newly created $250 bill — but there's a major hurdle: current U.S. law bars living people from appearing on currency.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday the idea would need to be approved by Congress first. U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach and his senior adviser have been in discussions with officials at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, following legislation introduced in the House that would authorize the move.
"At present, no living person can be on U.S. currency," Bessent told reporters. He said the Treasury is prepared to act if legislation passes, but "will stick to the law."
The push comes as the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary. A federal panel has already approved a gold coin featuring Trump — thoug...

Weekly rates of ER visits for tick bites are the highest for this time of year since 2017 in the region, according to the CDC's Tick Bite Tracker.
A tick researcher at Creighton University says the spike is likely due to more people reporting bites — not necessarily more ticks — which experts say is actually a good sign of increased awareness.
Pest control companies in the metro are also seeing the surge. Genie Pest Control in Council Bluffs says they've received about 25% more calls to spray lawns for ticks over the past month and a half, treating around 40 homes every week.
How to protect yourself: 🔹 Wear long pants and tall socks — tuck pants INTO socks 🔹 Use bug spray with tick repellent 🔹 Soak clothing in tick repellent — can last an entire season 🔹 Stay on trails and avoid unmaintained areas 🔹 Check for ticks after being outdoors, especially sock tops, behind ears, and under pet collars 🔹 It...

The goal: win back their coveted first-in-nation status after the Democratic National Committee stripped Iowa of that role following the chaotic 2020 tabulation meltdown. Iowa could compete with Illinois and Michigan to represent the Midwest in what may become one of four regional voting primaries in the 2028 cycle. - Description
- A new analysis from anti-ageism campaign Age Without Limits found that in the UK's 100 highest-grossing films from 2023–2025, lead actors named Chris — think Pratt, Pine, Hemsworth, and Evans — appeared more often than female leads over the age of 60. The study also found those films were four times more likely to feature a talking animal as a lead character than a woman over 60. Oscar winner Emma Thompson backed the campaign, saying: "Women are half the population, and we get older — so where are the stories about us?"

- An Omaha man is behind bars after a wild overnight pursuit on Interstate 80 in central Nebraska involving a stolen U-Haul truck and flatbed trailer. Jeffrey Ritchison, 40, allegedly assaulted a woman before stealing the U-Haul from a Kearney hotel. A multi-agency chase involving Kearney Police, the Nebraska State Patrol, and the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department unfolded at speeds between 15–55 mph. Spike strips were deployed multiple times, fires broke out in the median from sparks, and the trailer detached before the truck finally stopped near the Gibbon exit. Ritchison faces charges of flight to avoid arrest and robbery, with additional charges pending.
