- On the second day of Kwanzaa, the Madison Children’s Museum hosted a basket making class Wednesday to honor the holiday.
Kwanzaa spans seven days, with unique principles taught each day. Tuesday’s focus was on unity, while Wednesday’s focus was on self-determination.
“Kwanzaa is a really important holiday because it does celebrate our African heritage, Black American culture, it celebrates family and it celebrates community and all of those are really important,” said Museum Director of Community Partnerships Charlotte Cummins.
Other principles that will follow are collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers is remembering Kohl as a “Milwaukeean and Wisconsinite through and through” who dedicated his life to service.
“Sen. Kohl was deeply committed to community, kindness, and service to others,” Gov. Evers said. “Wisconsin’s seniors, students, teachers, and schools, and farmers and rural areas, among so many others, are better off because of his life and legacy, the impacts of which will last for generations.”

Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman said the Board learned of alleged conduct by Gow in recent days that has “subjected the university to significant reputational harm.”
“His actions were abhorrent,” Rothman said.
Gow announced in August that he had intended to step down at the end of the year and transition into a faculty role at the University. At the time, Rothman had described Gow as leaving UW-La Crosse as better than it was when he arrived and said he was grateful Gow would be serving for the full academic year.

- The Dane Co. Executive’s Office estimated nearly 10,000 dump truck’s worth of sludge and sediment were pulled from the bottom of the Yahara River this year as part of the county’s effort to avoid a repeat of the 2018 floods.
“This work is a hard slog, but we continue to make progress and are better prepared by the day for when the next round of heavy rains fall,” Dane Co. Executive Joe Parisi said. In his statement, Parisi said all the build-up at the bottom of the Yahara River contributed to the flooding by preventing high volumes of rain from flowing through.
The County Executive’s Office predicted climate change will lead to more heavy storms like the 2018 ones that led to the flooding that year. It argues taking these measures now will help mitigate the potential damage down the road.
According to the county numbers, its Flood Risk Reduction Project pulled out of the Yahara River over 118,000 cubic yards of sludge and sediment over...

- Minocqua Brewing Company owner Kirk Bangstad will file a petition with the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) in an attempt to bar former President Trump from the Wisconsin ballot.
This latest action from Bangstad comes as other states have already made decisions on whether to keep Donald Trump on their state ballots. On Wednesday, Michigan’s Supreme Court said it will not hear an appeal of a lower court’s ruling from groups seeking to keep Trump from appearing on the ballot.
It said in an order that the application by parties to appeal a Dec. 14 Michigan appeals court judgment was considered, but denied “because we are not persuaded that the questions presented should be reviewed by this court.”
The ruling contrasts with Dec. 19 decision by a divided Colorado Supreme Court which found Trump ineligible to be president because of his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. That ruling was the first time in history that Secti...

- Drivers near the University of Wisconsin campus have one less place to park as the City of Madison shuts down one of its parking garages for good. The State Street Campus Garage, Lake Street structure, was closed Wednesday morning to make way for a new multi-use facility.
The city’s Parking Division announced earlier this month the final day for the garage and said at the time it was working with monthly permit holders to find them a new facility.
While the Lake Street section is now closed, the Parking Division noted the Frances Street side is still operational. However, city officials pointed out drivers should expect the garage to be more crowded now because of ongoing construction and the loss of the Lake Street facility.

The agency explained investigators found the items after a federal search warrant was served at the trailer. At that point the 30-year-old suspect was taken into custody, and he has since been charged with unlawfully possessing a destructive device.
During Friday’s hearing, the federal judge stated the defendant will remain in custody until his next court date on Friday, Dec. 29, the DOJ noted. If convicted, he will face up to ten years in federal prison.

MPD reminded residents it is participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Holiday campaign from Dec. 13 to Jan. 1, 2024, along with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.
Drivers must be sober and should plan ahead if they plan to drink an alcoholic beverage, MPD stated. This could mean having someone be a designated driver, calling a rideshare service or not drinking at all.

‘The Village Brass’ was assembled this year, according to founder Bennette Harris.
“We’re headquartered in Belleville, the Village of Belleville. Some of our players come from the Village of New Glarus, so, The Village Brass made sense,” Harris said.
Harris says his goal is to find a group to play music by Giovanni Gabrieli, but he says more musicians are needed. With six members now, Harris says a total of 12 people would be ideal.

- As the automotive industry continues to shift, and the shortage of technicians persists, auto companies in Dane County are turning to their area high schools.
Seniors at Mt. Horeb High School Sawyer Stapelmann and Payton Jones spend a lot of time in their school’s garage.
“I like to get my hands dirty and be physically working on stuff instead of sitting in a classroom and learning about it from a book,” Jones said.
Their interest in the automotive industry coincides with the ongoing shortage.
