One student's home was destroyed, and another has family members who lost theirs. Derek James, who coaches men's and women's golf and the women's basketball team, told us a few players from all three sports came together and decided they needed to do something. That's what we are, James said. We're family. We're more than just a team. We spend lots of time together, and that's one thing around here that we all talk about, is our family. And any time family has a problem, we're there for them.James said what they're doing isn't organized or school sponsored. He said he and his players just feel the need to get involved and make a difference.

Now, some of those business owners are taking it upon themselves to fix the problem. For as long as Carolyn Oxtoby can remember, Springfield downtown revitalization has been an ongoing effort. She lives in the city, and owns 5 buildings, inheriting some of them during a downturn. That was in the 80's or so when the downtown was in very bad shape. White Oaks was going up and all the retail left and went out west, said Oxtoby. That's still the problem. Plenty of available space is downtown, but expansion continues elsewhere. That's happening all over the country. Cities are moving out and the retail and downtown parts of the city are moving out to the suburbs, said Oxtoby. One business that is taking advantage is Gyros Stop. They opened their 3rd Springfield location on Wabash Avenue. Light up the room, brighten the room, everyone we spoke with seemed to use those words.
How appropriate that a Facebook tribute with thousands of followers chose light as a way to remember.
I heard about the wreck and it just really kinda got to me, Morganne Sharrow said.

- What's known as the Detroit Auto Show of farm shows is just days away. Exhibitors are busy setting up for this year's Farm Progress Show in Decatur. The show will run next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and will give area farmers the chance to view new products and the latest technology in farming. This year's show is bigger than ever with 13 acres of more space on the grounds. Matt Jungmann, the Farm Progress National Events Manager said, I think we're setting a high watermark every year with the expansion of the facility. We've completely filled the area inside the fence and now expanded outside the fence into what used to be a parking lot to create an annex for everybody that's new that wasn't with us in 2011.One challenge Farm Progress officials face is the corn crop isn't ready to be harvested for in-field equipment demonstrations. As an alternative, a runway style show will be held. Bleachers will be set up and the equipment will go by as representatives talk about each piece.

- A mom is dealing with public scrutiny after she chose to publicly shame her son because he was stealing things. Kelly Howell says, she and her husband had simply run out of options. Eventually the two decided their 8 year-old son would stand on the sidewalk wearing a sign that read, I steal from my parents. Some neighbors complained and the cops were even called. While Howell doesn't face any charges she is dealing with a public backlash after a Buffalo news station reported it. But some of that scrutiny stems from Howell's own criminal record.

- All around the fair are stands full of taffy, lemonade, elephant ears, and so much more. While you're chowing down, the Illinois Department of Health is giving you an opportunity to get free dental screenings through out the fair. Again the screenings come at no cost. All you need to do is fill out a waiver and sit in the seat. Today, dental students from SIU Dental School in Alton were here helping out. They were also letting people know about mouth cancer, and keeping kids teeth healthy. I like getting my students here. The two students with me are fourth year dental students. So they get to come out and do something out in the community. Number one, it gets them out of our clinics, right their doing something completely different. Number two, their doing a free service for little kids, Dr. Poonam Jainj said. Here's a reason why parents may want to take advantage of these free dental screenings, Illinois state law requires kids going into kindergarten, second grade, and the sixth grade t...
