Jennifer Farrah Kendrick and Jeroen Jarrel Coombs are being held without bond at the Marion County Jail.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office announced the charges after an investigation into the Feb. 19, incident. Detectives determined that Coombs struck the child multiple times, resulting in her death, while Kendrick failed to protect the girl despite knowing of prior abuse.

- Floridians currently in the Middle East are searching for any way possible to return home as escalating conflict involving Iran spreads across the region.
Several Americans say they have no clear way out, as flights across much of the Middle East have been cancelled and airspace closures continue to expand.
The U.S. State Department has issued a rare “depart now” advisory, urging Americans to immediately leave 14 countries in the region, including Israel, Iran, Iraq and Egypt. The advisory Tuesday told Americans to leave using commercial transportation.
But for many travelers, including one Central Florida Rabbi, those commercial options have already disappeared.

- For decades, Orlando Fashion Square Mall was the heartbeat of the city’s retail scene. From first dates at the cinema to back-to-school shopping at the height of the 1970s and 80s mall culture, it was *the* place to be.
Today, the palm trees are dying, the massive parking lots are desolate, and the building’s exterior is in desperate need of a pressure wash. With the recent news that the Premiere Cinema 14—the mall’s last major foot-traffic driver—is closing on March 12, 2026, many residents are asking: why hasn’t this “eyesore” been torn down yet?
The answer lies in a complicated real estate standoff. Unicorp National Developments owns the land beneath the mall, but it doesn’t own the buildings. Those “improvements” are owned by Bancorp, which holds a land lease that doesn’t expire for another 25 to 30 years.

- The two Lake Brantley High School students accused of trying to resurrect the “Sandy Hook” school shooter by murdering one of their classmates in January were put into the back of the same patrol car after their arrest.
The move allowed officers to listen in to a conversation between the girls – who didn’t realize they were being recorded – which included jokes about mug shots, discussions about how much prison time they’d receive and frustrations one of their friends snitched, officers said.
Prosecutors are now using that conversation as ammunition against Isabelle Valdez and Lois Lippert as they push a judge to keep the girls behind bars.
Both Valdez and Lippert filed to be released pending their trials and have a court date next week, while prosecutors maintain they’re a danger to the community.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood showed body camera footage from a deputy capturing the incident as it happened.
During the encounter, the shooter fired 12 bullets at responding officers. According to deputies, he used a 9mm handgun that was initially purchased legally in Sanford. The weapon was subsequently sold to him for $600.
Investigators also found evidence about the suspect’s past questions regarding the use of force. On Feb. 14, the shooter reportedly asked an AI chat program whether he could shoot someone if they entered his property.

- The war in the Middle East spiraled further Monday as Israel and the U.S. pounded Iran. Tehran and its allies hit back against Israel, neighboring Gulf states, and targets critical to the world's production of oil and natural gas.
The intensity of the attacks, the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the lack of any apparent exit plan indicated the conflict would not end anytime soon.
Iran has long threatened to drag the region into total war, including targeting Israel, the Gulf Arab states and the flow of crude oil crucial for global energy markets. All of these came under attack on Monday.
At least 555 people have been killed in Iran so far by the U.S.-Israeli campaign, the Iranian Red Crescent Society said, and more than 130 cities across the country have come under attack. In Israel, 11 people have been killed, with 31 in Lebanon, according to authorities.

The attorneys argued it down to $500,000, saying Texas authorities had not sent over the warrants, and they did not know what the men were being charged with.

- A man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly pointed a handgun at members of an Altamonte Springs gym and attempted to fire the weapon.
Officers responded to 951 N. State Road 434 after witnesses said a man, later identified as Winston Medley, pulled a gun from his waistband. Medley was identified from gym membership records and staff surveillance video.
A witness who was about 10 feet away when the incident occurred told officers he saw a man lift his shirt, remove a gun, and point it at others. The witness said he saw the gun move as if the trigger had been pulled, but he didn’t hear a shot. The suspect seemed to handle the gun as if it were jammed or to disengage a safety before re-holstering it and fleeing.

Car owner Mike McCormick said, “And it’s a lot of money, and they’re really not stepping up, and I think they’re acting in bad faith.”
Two wiring harnesses in his small SUV fried when a water bottle spilled in his back seat. The car eventually stopped running.
After Action 9 aired the story in November, his insurance company, State Farm, sent a letter saying it did additional review and would cover the loss. So, McCormick was excited, but now he claims the insurance company pulled the rug out from under him.

- Description
- Florida is facing a one-billion-dollar penalty if it doesn’t reduce errors in its SNAP program by 2028.
About 3 million Floridians rely on the program so that they don’t go hungry, but right now the sunshine state has one of the highest error rates in the country, with only two states ranking worse than Florida: Georgia and Alaska.
According to the USDA, Florida’s 2024 error rate was over 15 percent.
The error rate measures how accurate the state is when it pays out SNAP benefits, with payment errors including both underpayments and overpayments.
The new penalty is a result of the One Big Beautiful Bill, which requires states to get their error rates below 6 percent, or pay a share of the costs to fund the SNAP program beginning in 2028.
That funding was previously covered by the Federal Government, but the bill shifts the costs penalizing states with the worst error rates.

- Documents show Daytona Beach, FL spent money on murals before fixing code violations at its marina. A resident is now planning to take legal action against the city after he fell face-first while tripping on a sidewalk there.
Gordon Jump has stitches in his forehead, a bruised face, and a sling on his arm after he took a tumble on a sidewalk at the Halifax Harbor Marina.
“We were just chit-chatting and going down, and suddenly I hit this split in the concrete,” said Jump.
His wife, Kim, said over the years, they’ve watched wheelchairs get stuck and dozens of people fall. The city painted yellow lines on the uneven surfaces but never invested in a permanent fix until now.
“It’s like they don’t even care, and I even spoke at a commission meeting, and the last thing I said was the people here want safety and security,” said Jump.
The lack of maintenance at the city-owned marina was also brought up by Commission...

- Months after Action 9 first exposed major convenience store chains charging an extra tax on coffee drinkers, some stores are still charging the tax even though they aren’t supposed to under Florida law.
“The state cheerfully is taking our money, and there’s no repercussion, there’s no answer, there’s no concern,” said Paul Olkowski of Lake County.
But some of the major chains have stopped charging the tax. In November, Action 9 first showed many convenience stores charged sales tax on canned and bottled coffee drinks. The problem is the ready-to-drink coffees are considered a food product and aren’t subject to sales tax, but stores may have been charging the tax for decades.
Cracking a refreshing can of cold coffee, for Paul Olkowski, it now leaves a sour taste in his mouth.
“Well, you know, I enjoyed them a lot more prior to this happening to me,” Olkowski told Action 9 Consumer Investigator Jeff Deal.
