- You might have heard that the U.S. turns 250 this year. It’s a big, corporate to-do — the phrase “America 250” is plastered all over baseball hats and bags of potato chips.
But what do Americans really make of this anniversary? The historian Jill Lepore and audiomaker Sophie Crane wanted to find out. They sent reporters all across the country, from California to Louisiana to Vermont, to listen to what people had to say about it.
This piece is part of a project called The Listeners (https://transom.org/the-listeners/) , an experiment in hyperlocal documentary storytelling from the Transom Story Lab (https://transom.org/) .

In this story, Greg and Jordan talk about their job, which is pretty much the same job that all small funeral homes do, not only in Vermont but across the country. The work is practical, but also delicate; full of logistical details, but also big, complicated emotions.
What’s it like to be the person who’s caring for community members when they’re at their most vulnerable, feeling grief, confusion, and loss?

Ken Burns has been making documentary films for almost fifty years. Since the Academy Award nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, Burns has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made, including The Civil War; Baseball; Jazz; and, most recently, The American Revolution.
At the Flynn last month, Burns shared his thoughts on the American Revolution — what he has called "the most important event in world history since the birth of Christ" — and his approach to documentary filmmaking.
"We're subtractive," Burns said of his process. "We're making maple syrup, right? We've got 400 hours of stuff to come down to 12."
Burns' future film projects include Emancipation to Exodus, and LBJ & the Great Society, among others.

Ravens are a protected species under federal law, and it’s illegal to move or kill them without a permit. (The birds are thriving in Vermont.)
The local band that had been scheduled to open the summer concert series — Troy Millette and the Fire Below — will now close the series in September.
