Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said on Tuesday (Sept. 8) that the West should involve Assad and his allies Iran and Russia to fight rebel ISIL militants seeking to advance across Syria and to establish an Islamic “caliphate” in the Middle East.
Austrian President Heinz Fischer even met with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in Tehran — making him the first EU leader to visit Iran in more than a decade. The pair gave a joint news conference.

It comes after 16 Turkish soldiers were killed in a PKK ambush in south-eastern Turkey on Sunday.
Meanwhile, reports are coming in that eleven Turkish police officers have been killed in an attack on a minibus in Igdir in eastern Turkey.

Turkish TV channel IMC reported that 126 provincial and district branches have been assaulted by nationalists.
The violence was in response to the deaths of 16 soldiers who died in a PKK ambush on Sunday in the Yüksekova district of southeastern Hakkari province.
There have also been reports of Kurd houses coming under attack and of their vehicles being set alight in some places.
Earlier in the day Turkey’s Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, pledged to wipe out the PKK in its mountain hideouts.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also promised a decisive response, saying he was saddened by the soldiers’ deaths.

Clashes continue despite curfew
Kurdish militants and sympathisers have clashed with the security forces in several towns to the east of the country.
In Diyarbakir, police used water cannon to disperse the crowds, who gathered in defiance of a curfew.
This is the latest wave in a surge of violence between the army and the PKK since July, when a ceasefire collapsed.

Since 2001, the FBI had identified al-Mughassil as the mastermind of the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers residence at a US military base in Saudi Arabia. The truck bomb attack killed 19 U.S. service staff and wounded almost 500 people.

- Islamist militants known as ISIL have reportedly blown up an ancient temple at the ruins of Palmyra in Syria which is one of the Middle East’s most significant archaeological sites .
The Baalshamin Temple was the most intact structure in the 2,000 year-old Roman-era city.
ISIL took control of Palmyra in May which lies in a strategically important area between Damascus and the city of Deir al-Zour.
Last month the group published photos of its members destroying what it said were ancient artefacts. from the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Head of UNESCO Irina Bokova warned on Friday that Islamic state extremists in Syria and Iraq were involved in “the most brutal, systematic” destruction of ancient sites since World War II.
A week ago, it emerged that they had beheaded the 81-year-old archaeologist, Khaled Asaad who had looked after Palmyra’s ruins for over four decades.

People have poured onto the streets of Beirut to denounce authorities’ inability to find a solution to a crisis that started last month when the main refuse tip in the city closed.
As police clashed with protesters, Prime Minister Tammam Salam
warned that heavily-indebted Lebanon was headed towards collapse.
Threatening to resign, Salam, 70, said a bigger problem than the rubbish crisis was what he called the country’s “political garbage”. Lebanon’s government is paralysed by deep divisions.
The premier also said that security forces found to have used excessive force against demonstrators would be brought to account.

The Egyptian interior ministry says a man fled on a motorbike after leaping out of a car which then exploded.
The attack happened early on Thursday morning in the in the northern Shubra al-Khama district of the capital.
“I was on my way back from work, driving my car over a bridge. Suddenly the bridge shook strongly, it felt like an earthquake,” said one witness.
“Everything around me shook strongly, people started running in the streets, I saw a wounded man on the ground; the windows fell on him, because the blast was so strong,” another young man added.
No-one has claimed responsibility but militants in Sinai sympathetic to ISIL, which controls parts of Iraq and Syria and has a presence in Egypt, have previously been behind attacks on security forces.
