Police say he intentionally hit the girls with his Jeep. Municipal court files indicated he was traveling at a speed of 70 mph on Burnside Avenue, which is a 25 mph zone.
Tuesday’s vigil comes as Battiloro’s criminal case remains ongoing. In June, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office announced that Battiloro, who was 17 at the time of the crash, would be prosecuted as an adult.
During Battiloro’s initial appearance in Union County Superior Court on July 1, he agreed to remain detained while the case proceeded.
The next step is a presentation to a grand jury, which will determine whether there is probable cause to return an indictment. Grand jury proceedings are confidential.

This giant machine will drill 30 feet a day to create the new train tunnel under the Hudson River.
Because of the hardness of the rock in the Palisades, the boring machines will take one year to complete drilling two tunnels under them, said James Starace, GDC Chief of Program Delivery.
The green spinning cutting heads on the massive machines spin at roughly three to 5 revolutions per minute, cut rock off the cliff face, break it and drop it on to conveyor belts in the machine that transport it to carts at the back of the machine, he said.
