- Junoon in Urdu Poetry: Meaning, Madness, and Purpose
- Date posted
- Description
- Junoon is often translated as passion or madness, but in Urdu poetry it carries layered, sometimes conflicting meanings. For poets like Mirza Ghalib, junoon is dangerous if exposed or fully unpacked. It then becomes a force so raw that it can undo the self.
If Ghalob's junoon is intense, self-aware, and often destructive, poets like Ahmad Faraz and Ameer Qazalbash later engage with the same intensity differently. Where Ghalib is wary of junoon’s excess, they explore what happens when that intensity is held with awareness and direction when madness becomes purposeful rather than consuming.
This episode traces that shift in from junoon, from a volatile force that must remain partially veiled, to junoon as a creative energy that can transform darkness into light. Junoon, in the end, is not one thing. It is a risk and sometimes, a possibility.

- When Hard Work Isn’t Enough: Mehnat in Everyday Life and Poetry
- Date posted
- Description
- In this episode, we sit with the Urdu word 'mehnat' which is usually translated as 'hard work', but carrying far more tiredness, repetition, and lived experience.
Moving between everyday life and Urdu poetry, the episode pushes back against the idea that hard work always guarantees success. From the comforting language of motivational culture to the kind of labour that happens quietly, without visibility or reward, 'mehnat' here is effort that continues even when energy runs low and outcomes remain uncertain.
At the centre of the episode is Kaifi Azmi’s nazm Makan, which speaks directly to inequality, to those who build homes, palaces, and comfort for others, while having no place of rest themselves.
This is not a motivational talk. It’s a conversation about work that doesn’t shine, effort that isn’t applauded, and the kind of labour that changes life gradually, over time, rather than all at once. Tune in.

- Dua as Faith, Action and Inheritance: Reading Ghalib, Munawwar Rana and Kaifi Azmi
- Date posted
- Description
- In Urdu poetry, dua is never just prayer but it is a reflection of how a poet relates to hope, faith, and control.
For Ghalib, dua is too uncertain. He chooses action over waiting, offering his entire self instead of trusting outcomes.
For Munawwar Rana, dua is absolute assurance, a mother's prayer that walks beside him like protection, unquestioned and complete.
And for Kaifi Azmi, dua becomes the final gift that a father offers when strength, means, and time have run out, leaving only blessing and trust in the child’s choice.
Three poets. One word.
And three very different ways of believing in what prayer can do.

In this episode, we step into Ghalib’s world through one of his most well-known ghazals, 'Koi Umeed Bar Nahin Aati.' - Why India’s Gen Z Rejected Their Parents’ Money Advice | The Quint

- India’s Gen Z is a mystery for any economist. They make less money in real inflation-adjusted terms than the previous generation, the millennials, but they spend much more on consumption and experiences than any other generation did. While their parents saved to build assets, Gen Z has very little savings. In fact, they often have huge amounts of debt—credit card payments that they have rolled over, or personal loans they have taken—without a concrete plan on how to pay them back. The reason for this can be encapsulated in one term: Financial Nihilism. In a brand-new episode of 'Caught in the Middle', senior business journalist Aunindyo Chakravarty explains why Gen Zs don't believe in conventional financial wisdom, instead choosing to learn everything about investments from Instagram influencers. - How Fadnavis Ignored Own Committee to Approve Mining In a Tiger Corridor | The Quint
- Date posted
- Description
- A proposed iron ore mining project in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district could see over 18,000 trees felled across 35.95 hectares, disrupt thousands of plant species, displace wildlife—including tigers—and push 650 villages closer to human–tiger conflict. In return, the project promises 120 jobs, only 32 of them permanent.
Cleared by the Devendra Fadnavis–chaired State Board for Wildlife (SBWL), the project is located inside a Reserved Forest Zone in the Brahmapuri Division, a crucial corridor directly linked to the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, India’s largest national park. Chandrapur alone is home to nearly 250 of India’s roughly 4,000 tigers.
What has raised alarm is that the clearance was granted despite strong opposition from the SBWL’s own expert committee, which warned that mining in the area would cause “irreversible damage” to forests and wildlife.
For locals, the threat is already real. In 2025, Chandrapur recorded 47 deaths from t...

- India Is the 3rd Largest Economy, So Why Does It Still Feel Weak? | The Quint

- Description
- India just posted a stunning 8.2% GDP growth number. At the same time, the rupee slid sharply and interest rates were cut.
Economists argued. Politicians celebrated. Twitter exploded.
But here’s the uncomfortable question: do these numbers actually reflect economic strength?
This video breaks down why GDP, the number we obsess over the most, is a deeply imperfect measure. It’s an estimate, not a hard fact. It can rise even when real lives don’t improve. And it often distracts us from what actually matters.
Instead of debating whether GDP is ‘real’ or ‘cooked’, this conversation looks at something more tangible: economic muscle. Not slogans. Not rankings. Real capacity.
Things like:
– How much countries invest in AI infrastructure
– Industrial automation and robots
– Data centres and ports
– Steel production
– Stock markets and global companies
When India is compared not to the US or China, but to ...

- In this video, we explore a compelling Raghav's Take that revisits an important 'what-if' question: What if India had built its democratic system on Proportional Representation (PR), like South Africa did in 1994?
After the end of apartheid, South Africa faced violent ethnic conflict, deep political divisions, and existential fear—much like India did at the time of independence. Yet, its negotiated transition embraced a proportional system that ensured representation for multiple groups and avoided winner-takes-all outcomes.
We break down:
• What Proportional Representation (PR) means and how it worked in South Africa
• How the 1994 elections brought inclusive outcomes and power-sharing
• Why India chose the First Past the Post (FPTP) system instead
• Whether India’s democracy would look different today under PR
• Key lessons for electoral reform and representative politics

- 2025’s Wild Ride: How Social Media Decided What We Saw, Said, and Shared | The Quint
- Date posted
- Description
- 2025 wasn’t just another year of viral content; it was the year social media didn't just influence, but ran the narrative. From comedians facing legal battles for off-hand remarks to fake wars being broadcast as breaking news, social media not only shaped opinions but also dictated consequences. Lipi Vats takes the reins in this end-of-year commentary, breaking down how creators, politicians, and even governments had to adapt (or be punished) by the ever-powerful digital landscape. With moments like Zohran Mamdani's election run and Donald Trump turning every moment into content, one thing became crystal clear: you don’t need to be right, real, or even funny; you just need to be content. Tune in for a ride through 2025, where social media wasn’t just a platform; it was the stage.

According to the Congress, the meeting focused on the survivor’s safety, legal concerns, and support mechanisms.
