- Description
- A day after a Mexican sailing vessel slammed its masts into the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge, new details about the crash, which killed two crew members and injured at least 22 others, began to emerge.
The accident occurred after the ship left Pier 17 in Manhattan, just below the Brooklyn Bridge. It was supposed to head south and sail out of New York Harbor, with a stop on the Brooklyn waterfront to refuel before heading to Iceland.
Instead, the ship headed in the wrong direction, under the Brooklyn Bridge, where it was never intended to sail, according to a spokesman for the city’s emergency management office.
U.S. and Mexican officials are investigating what led to the accident.

In his homily, the new pontiff sought to bridge the divisions in the church between those who want to engage with the modern world by pushing ahead with the inclusive approach of Pope Francis, and those more conservative members who favor a return to an emphasis on the church’s traditions.
