- The men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested Parker Osei, a Ghanaian-British man, with parcels of cannabis at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The 20-year-old man was allegedly apprehended with 36 parcels of loud, a strong strain of cannabis, weighing 19.40 kilogrammes packed in a “giant” travelling bag.
The suspect, who claimed to be a student of computer science at East London University, UK, was arrested on Thursday during the inward clearance of passengers on an Ethiopian airlines flight from Bangkok, Thailand, at the e-arrival hall of the Lagos airport.
Upon questioning, Osei claimed to live with his parents in the UK but left London a week ago for Bangkok where he picked up the illicit drug consignment for delivery in Nigeria.

- A witness identified as Muideen Azeez told TheCable that the fire that burned shops at Aleshinloye market in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, was caused by an electric spark in a shop where plastics are sold.
“The fire started in the shop and caught the goods that were offloaded off a trailer and spread to other shops,” Azeez said.
He said first responders tried to contain the inferno to no avail.
Another witness said the fire would have been contained if the fire service centre in the market was functional.
“See fire centre here but no water, no trucks. Nothing is working. We don’t have government presence here, all they do is just to collect money and tax from us,” a witness lamented.

- The federal government has announced an 80% subsidy on kidney dialysis, reducing the cost from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000 per session.
The initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu, aims to ease the financial burden on Nigerians battling kidney disease.
The subsidy is being implemented across several federal medical institutions in the six geopolitical zones.
The programme was first launched in January at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, where patients have already started benefitting.

To benefit from the subsidy, patients should visit any of the listed federal medical centres or teaching hospitals.

- Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior on Wednesday discussed the progress in Nigeria’s passport application system. He said the introduction of the contactless passport application system will make life easier for Nigerians worldwide.
According to him, the system has already been implemented in Canada and Europe and will be rolled out in Asia this month.
“What we have done in Canada, what we have done in Europe now, and what we are taking to Asia this month is what we call the contactless passport application, which reduces or eradicates human contact. It makes life easier for Nigerians,” Tunji-Ojo said.
In October 2024, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced the launch of the contactless passport application system, with phase one in Canada.
