- The first Unknown Soldier interred in the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier in 1921 died during a WWI offensive in France and was buried on French soil. On October 25, 1921, the Unknown Soldier’s U.S. flag-draped casket arrived in Le Havre, France, and was ceremonially carried aboard the USS Olympia for the 15-day transatlantic voyage home to the U.S.
On Oct. 25, 2021, the city of La Havre unveiled a plaque dedicated to the unknown American Soldier who died for France as U.S. Sailors based in Naples, Italy, and French Marins stood side by side in formation.

On October 24, 1921, the Unknown Soldier, who died on French soil in WWI, was ceremonially moved from Town Hall in Châlons-en-Champagne, France, to a special train bound for Le Havre. On October 24, 2021, the town of Châlons re-created the historic event to commemorate the 100th anniversary with the participation of the U.S. European Command Joint Color Guard and Soldiers from U.S. Army Europe-Africa. Twenty-nine Navajo men initially selected by Marine Corps leadership, used their unique and complex native language to formulate a code that remained unbreakable to the enemy in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
