- Description
- The Midwest doesn't just produce great companies and bold ideas, we make culture. We make art. And sometimes we make history. This fall, one of Minnesota's greatest stories, Purple Rain, is getting a new life on Broadway. The show is being developed right now in Minneapolis.
This is an early look at what's taking shape to help pull back the curtain. Rohan Preston, theater critic at the Minnesota Star Tribune, has been following this production closely. He's joined by several key members of the creative team bringing Prince's masterpiece to the stage: Oren Wolff, the show's producer; Brandon Jacobs Jenkins, a Tony and Pulitzer-winning playwright who's adapting the film story for Broadway; and Bobby Z, the original drummer for Prince and the Revolution, who is serving as musical advisor on the new production.

- Minnesota has lit up the skyrocketing demand for THC drinks. A state that doesn’t allow sales of real beer or wine in grocery stores, it unexpectedly became a leading producer of the low-dose, moderate-high-inducing beverages, starting with the Minnesota hemp legalization law passed in 2022. Beverages infused with the hemp-derived compound (aka tetrahydrocannabinol) now rival beer sales for some local breweries and have been strong through liquor retailers such as Total Wine. And go figure: You can even buy THC drinks in Minnesota grocery stores.
“Basically, it came down to good timing,” Surly Brewing founder Omar Ansari said of how Minnesota landed in front of the THC beverage market. States that legalized recreational marijuana early on, such as Colorado and California, generally did not include THC beverages in their laws. But Minnesota’s 2022 bill did, allowing more widespread retail distribution than other states had. The floodgates opened. Minnesota now accou...

- The mission of St. Cloud’s wastewater treatment plan is simple: clean the water flowing in from toilets before it is released into the Mississippi River. But why stop there? After dreaming up — and finding the funding for — a few special projects, the city is now at the forefront of wastewater ingenuity. It is using waste to make fertilizer for farmers. It is using power harnessed from the breakdown of local manufacturers’ wastewater to create 100% renewable energy to power the treatment facility. And when the city’s new $3 million electrolyzer — a device that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen — is installed in the coming months, St. Cloud will have the first wastewater treatment plant in the world to produce green hydrogen and use the byproducts of oxygen and heat waste.
About a decade ago, former Mayor Dave Kleis set a goal for the city to be 75% renewable by 2035. It exceeded that goal by becoming 100% renewable in 2020, and today, the city produces th...

- Building a partnership to make Minnesota a hub for the emerging sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry, a move that could cut the carbon footprint of airlines and create jobs.
Scientists estimate that using SAF can reduce carbon footprint by up to 80% on flights. While Delta and other airlines know SAF will work in today’s aircraft, there’s not enough of it being made, said Jeff Davidman, vice president of government affairs for Delta. It’s also too expensive right now.
In 2024, Delta purchased 330 million gallons of SAF, a drop in the bucket compared with the annual 4 billion gallons of jet fuel used. But that SAF number has doubled annually. And the airline has committed to producing 10% of its jet fuel through SAF by 2030 and wants to have net-zero emissions by 2050. The Minnesota SAF Hub wants to produce 100 million gallons of SAF by 2035. If achieved, that means a new, “clean-tech” industry will be built out in the state
