- How a child care funding freeze will affect day care centers
- Date posted
- Description
- At Kiddie College of Louisville, children spend their days learning skills they’ll soon need in kindergarten. Vermillion Shelton, owner and director, said that mission has never been more important as students work to catch up from COVID-19 pandemic learning gaps. The Trump administration announced it is freezing federal child care funding nationwide following claims by a YouTuber who said they uncovered fraud schemes at Minnesota day care centers run by Somali immigrants. “Thirty-four thousand kids in Kentucky are able to have child care because of this federal funding," said U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville. Pausing funding in all 50 states over alleged fraud in one state is unfair to Kentucky families, McGarvey said.

- Why is the largest state park in the U.S. failing its communities?
- Date posted
- Description
- There’s nothing like it anywhere else in the world: The Adirondack Park. It's home to stunning vistas, clean water, and about 2.5 million acres of land as wild as it was in 1892, the year it was designated the first Forever Wild Forest reserve in the nation. It’s the largest state park, and the largest National Historic landmark in the United States. But the park is struggling. Portions of the park can be compared to an ailing patient. Population loss, a housing shortage, climate change and one-size-fits-all policymaking out of Albany have all led to a loss of social capital: the ephemeral fabric that binds communities together to achieve a common goal. The Adirondacks may be protected by New York’s state constitution, but its human population is fraying.

- How the U.S. Postal Service prepares for holiday rush
- Date posted
- Description
- With nearly 169 million addresses, the U.S. Postal Service delivers more mail than any other postal system in the world. In fact, it accounts for about 44% of the world’s mail. Randy Lovejoy has been delivering it since he was 19. For decades, the father of three — now in his 40s — starts every day sorting letters and gathering packages in his assigned area of the post office. "We get more Amazon than anything," he said. Lovejoy said many times shippers will deliver Amazon packages to the post office and use USPS to bring it the last mile. The agency says it’s added hundreds of package sorting machines in the past five years, including around 100 this year alone to handle the extra holiday volume. It expects to deliver 35% more holiday packages this year than last.
