The downing of a Turkish plane by Syria was an act of self-defense against a violation of its sovereignty, the Syrian foreign ministry has said. Damascus insists it was within its right to open fire on unidentified aircraft violating its airspace.
The statement by the Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Magdissi comes a day after Ankara accused Damascus of violating international law in last Friday's incident.

- Two witnesses to al-Houla massacre said that the massacres in that area were carried out by armed terrorists who targeted specific families that supported the government and refused to join protests, bear arms or pay money to the terrorists.
The two witnesses, who identities were not disclosed for their protection, said on Friday in interviews with the Syrian TV that the terrorists came from several areas and attacked law-enforcement forces checkpoints simultaneously using advanced wepaons, adding that the images shown on TV channels were of the people murdered by terrorists along with the bodies of the gunmen killed in the initial conflict which were piled with the victims to increase the number of bodies.

The Syrian ambassador to the United Nations has blamed some members of the UN Security Council for fanning the flames in Syria.
"Whatever the claims of this ambassador or that, as a member of the Security Council, when he addresses the journalists at the stakeout, he should not use the term 'Syrian regime.' He should say the Syrian government if he wants to act responsibly," he protested.
"So they are violating themselves the rules and procedures of how to fulfill their noble task in the Security Council," the envoy added.
Ja'afari was referring to comments made by US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice, who had suggested the possibility of military intervention in Syria if the peace plan brokered by UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Kofi Annan failed.
