- Amid the coronavirus pandemic, two Bay Area organizations, Mission Meals Coalition and SF Community Fridge, have teamed up to bring a fridge stocked with fresh, free food to San Francisco’s Mission District.
"Mutual aid is not new. Mutual aid did not happen just because of the coronavirus. That's how our communities have been surviving historically," says Mission Meals co-founder Gabriela Alemán. “If history has shown us anything, it's that Black, brown and queer folks are the pillars in our communities."

Spicy Tuna Hand Roll | Makes 1
3 tablespoons chopped tuna (can use scraps from cutting tuna for nigiri)
½ teaspoon mayonnaise
½ teaspoon flying fish roe
¼ teaspoon Sriracha sauce
¼ teaspoon finely chopped green onion, white part only or white and tender green part
½ sheet nori, toasted
¼ cup Sushi Rice (see recipe), at body temperature, covered with a damp kitchen towel
1/8 teaspoon wasabi paste
10 daikon sprouts, roots removed
Soy sauce, for serving
To make the filling: In a small bowl, combine the tuna, mayonnaise, roe, Sriracha sauce and green onion and stir to mix.

- Kabocha squash from the farmer's market inspires a warming "stoup" for the cold weather. Yes, a “stoup” is somewhere between a stew and a soup. While this recipe calls for kabocha squash, it would also work with butternut or acorn squash. Serve with plenty of crusty bread for dipping.
Serves 6
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large red onion, roughly chopped
2 tablespoons minced ginger
1 tablespoon minced garlic
¼ cup red or brown miso paste
¼ cup mirin
6 cups chicken or vegetable stock, plus more if needed
3½ pounds kabocha squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 1½-inch chunks
12 ounces mushrooms, stems removed and quartered

- Every Friday, Helen Anderson, 92, gets on her motorized wheelchair, grabs a cardboard sign from her closet, leaves her Redwoods senior community apartment, and motors to the corner of Miller Avenue and Camino Alto in Mill Valley. Following behind her is her 94-year-old husband, Gordon, pushing his walker, his trusty harmonica safely tucked in his shirt pocket.
Waiting for the Andersons on the corner are dozens of fellow Redwoods residents holding up signs of protest with messages such as, “No War in North Korea,” “End Gun Violence” and “Peace is Patriotic.” With an average age of 86, they make up Mill Valley Seniors for Peace.
“No matter how old or young you can be,” Anderson says, “we can all find a voice to speak for what we believe in.”

- During mushroom season, Alan Rockefeller spends his free time wandering the woods, collecting samples. He takes pieces of fungi back to Counter Culture Labs, a community lab space in Oakland, to identify the species using DNA extraction. He isn’t employed by a research institution, nor paid at all for his efforts. Rockefeller is a remarkably dedicated volunteer, a citizen scientist in the field of mycology — the study of fungi.
Rockefeller’s commitment and diligence has led him to identify and name one mushroom scientifically: Psilocybe allenii, a hallucinogenic mushroom from the West Coast.
“The data is extremely interesting,” he says of fungal DNA. “You can see where else in the world the same mushroom is existing, and how it fits into all of the other mushrooms, and help uncover new species.”

“A hungry kid can’t really think, or be creative, in school,” she said. “The only thing a hungry kid can think about is how hungry he or she is.”
Campbell continued working in the community after the Black Panthers dissolved, hosting a Black Panther Free Breakfast for Children Program 50th year anniversary event at the Church of Eight Wheels to celebrate the grassroots efforts that began 50 years before in San Francisco.

- At 90 years old, Walt Schneebeli swims in the bay three times a week with a group that calls themselves the ‘Old Goats.’ Walt is the "oldest goat" still swimming at the Dolphin Club, and he has a rich history of being a Korean War veteran and a Steinhart Aquarium collector.
