- In 2020, Jilchristina Vest began fundraising to have a mural memorializing the women of the Black Panther Party painted on her West Oakland home. Vest has lived in West Oakland since 1999, and says she moved there because of the Black Panther Party’s history in the neighborhood.
Vest sought the input of female members of the Black Panther Party in creating the mural. “I wanted to make sure that it felt like an honoring,” she said.

- At the recent Rat Creek washout, water and flames combined to wreak havoc. The Dolan Fire last summer destabilized the southern end of Big Sur, making it ripe to slide when the January storm hit. With 16 inches of rain in some spots, runoff carried weakened trees and shaky slopes down the mountain, ultimately pouring across the road near mile marker 30 and breaking the highway apart.

- 73-year-old Raul Garnelo is the first to receive his Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at San Francisco’s newest mass vaccination site at Moscone South.
Once a hub for tech conferences, the Moscone Center in the San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood will open as a mass vaccination site Friday, with an eventual capacity to deliver up to 10,000 doses per day.
Kaiser said it will begin vaccinating 1,500 people at the site Friday, and then will give shots to another 3,000 to 4,000 a day through next week until the supply runs low. People 65 and older are eligible; they do not have to be Kaiser patients to receive a vaccine at the site.

- A stretch of Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast in Monterey County washed away Thursday after being hit by a debris flow off a hillside following heavy rains. That portion of the scenic road had already been closed as part of a 44-mile closure due to the county’s evacuation order ahead of the rain. It was immediately unclear if the debris flow that is eroding this portion of Highway 1 was connected to the Dolan Fire burn scar, although the area has been susceptible to mudslides in the past.

- Oakland International this week became the first airport in the U.S. to sell COVID-19 test kits in vending machines, according to airport officials.
The COVID-19 test kits are located at both airport terminals in contactless kioks. The at-home kits require individuals to submit a saliva sample via FedEx. Individuals will receive results on a mobile phone app, airport officials said.
“As one of the first airports to offer on-site rapid COVID testing, we are now providing even more testing options for travelers,” Bryant L. Francis, Port of Oakland aviation director, said in a statement.
Francis added, “We still urge travelers to make sure they are current on any quarantines and regulations at their destinations.”

- Oakland’s The Alley, an 87-year-old piano bar, is a one-of-a-kind dive bar with 60 years’ worth of yellowed business cards tacked haphazardly to the dark wood walls. Like all bars, the Alley was hit hard by COVID-19. But perhaps more so than other bars, the Alley’s specialty has been unquestionably off-limits since March: The combination of a confined space and people singing is enough to make even an amateur epidemiologist run for the hills.
And perhaps also more than other bars, the Alley is home to a community of regulars who didn’t just miss the place. They needed it. “It is sort of a sacred space for many people,” says Bryan Seet, a Toronto-born, classically trained pianist and bandleader. “It’s a place of entertainment, yes, but also of refuge and restoration. Offshore winds were particularly strong at higher elevations. One sensor, located in Sonomoa County at about 3,880 feet in elevation, showed peak wind speeds of 97 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
The windy weather has collided with an alarmingly dry winter season, creating conditions that appear to have contributed to several fires that sprouted up late Monday and early Tuesday — highly unusual events for late January.

- California hospitals have another shortage on their hands: Nurses are in critically short supply at every level.
So the state is now allowing hospitals and nursing homes to request an emergency waiver from the California law that strictly limits the number of patients assigned to each nurse. Hundreds of nursing homes and more than 100 hospitals have received the waivers, which expire March 1.
It’s the second time since the coronavirus pandemic began that hospitals have been allowed to temporarily exceed those ratios. Gov. Gavin Newsom lifted the caps from March through June, prompting protests from nurses up and down the state.

Lenny spent all of Tuesday without once falling off his board. “Definitely one of the best sessions I’ve ever had out there,” he said in a post-dinner phone conversation with The Chronicle. “I crossed some deep personal barriers, things I had to commit to, like sitting super-deep (closest to the peak) and getting to that outer edge where the second-reef waves were coming in. That really got me excited. I felt like there wasn’t a wave that was too big. It was just a matter of being in the right place.”

- A San Francisco police car collided with and injured two bicyclists after entering an intersection in the Sunset district this month, a crash captured on video that a victim’s attorney said occurred when the police officer ran a red light.
One of the cyclists was hospitalized in the Dec. 4 incident and both sustained non-life threatening injuries, officials said.

- Louis Michael’s college graduation was canceled over the summer, but the Vallejo resident still wanted to walk in his cap and gown. Sarahbeth Maney’s photograph of Michael standing with his fist in the air in front of police officers went viral. It was Michael’s first protest. Four days later, on June 2, the direction of Michael’s life changed when Sean Monterrosa, a 22-year-old San Franciscan, was fatally shot by Vallejo police. He was the 19th person killed by Vallejo police since 2010.
Michael, 23, had planned to go to graduate school. Instead, in June, he started Vessels of Vallejo, a community organization to fight the oppression of marginalized people. In August, he began his campaign for a seat on the Vallejo City Council. He only captured 37% of the vote, losing to Mina Diaz, a real estate agent and community advocate who is the first Latina elected to the City Council in Vallejo, which is about 25% Latino, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

- Approximately 1.5 million American citizens live in Mexico. Many of those who live in Baja California voted early. But some voted in person on Election Day after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border — despite challenges brought on by the pandemic.
To curb the spread of the coronavirus, daily crossing hours at the Tecate Port of Entry were reduced, causing long delays for cross-border communities who live in Mexico and work or go to school in California. On election day, people had to wait as long as two hours to cross the border — a daily frustration that weighs heavily for some.

- It’s a complicated time to be voting — the nation is in the middle of a pandemic, and tens of millions of people are casting their votes by mail, some for the first time. For Californians, things are perhaps simpler than elsewhere: Anyone who was registered to vote was sent a ballot in the mail this year, and there are plenty of options for how and where to return one.

- Students from the Oakland School of the Arts collaborated with Brianna Noble, an activist who experienced viral fame over the summer as the “Black Lives Matter equestrian,” on a socially distanced Halloween event Friday in Sunnydale. It was the high school freshman’s first time styling a horse, which was surprisingly patient during the hour-long process.
To kick off the event, Noble yelled out “Watusi, Wakanda forever!” and rode three blocks downhill to the Sunnydale Boys and Girls Club and Willie L. Brown Jr. Youth Center. The group was accompanied by a police car playing the “Black Panther” soundtrack for added ambiance.

- With less than a week to go before the Nov. 3 election, the data shows that Californians are definitely exercising their right to vote. Ballots cast in the state as of Monday have already surpassed 50% of the total cast in 2016, according to California officials and the U.S. Elections Project at the University of Florida. About one-third of ballots sent to registered voters in the state this year have been submitted.
“We have been strongly urging voters to consider voting early, and so far Californians are responding,” said Sam Mahood, spokesman for the California secretary of state’s office. “Californians have been returning their ballots in record numbers.” Nationwide, more than 66 million people have already voted, equaling about 48% of total 2016 ballots cast, according to the U.S. Elections Project.
