- Artemis II and the new space race
- Date posted
- Description
- The launch of Artemis II marks the next step in a new space race, with the US and China working to be the first to return to the moon.
"For decades after the last space race, NASA was really the only game in town, for better or worse. The plan changed," NASA chief Jared Isaacman said last month.
"We find ourselves with a real geopolitical rival, challenging American leadership in the high ground in space."
As NASA adjusts its focus, China, which has already launched several robotic missions to the moon says it is on track to land people on the moon by 2030.
But President Donald Trump wants US astronauts back on the moon by the end of his term, which would be one year earlier than China’s goal.
So what's driving the new space race?

- Has the property market taken a turn?
- Date posted

- Description
- New data from Cotality has shown that growth in house prices has slowed across the country following two interest rate hikes and amid economic uncertainty caused by the war in the Middle East.
While the national median price rose to $933,000 over the first three months of the year, up more than 2 per cent in the quarter, it appears to be a tale of two halves.
Prices in mid-tier capitals are still on the rise, with Perth and Brisbane leading the way.
Meanwhile, home values in Sydney and Melbourne have taken a dip, with the higher end of the market in those two capitals seeing the biggest falls.

- Trump encourages nations to buy US oil or 'simply go in and take it'
- Date posted
- Description
- Donald Trump has urged countries cut off from fuel supplies to buy oil from the United States of America, adding that America has "plenty" to offer.
"The United States imports almost no oil through the Hormuz Strait, and won't be taking any in the future. We don't need it," he said.
He also hinted toward other countries stepping up to manage the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 25 per cent of the world's oil passes.
"The countries of the world that do receive oil through the Hormuz Strait must take care of that passage ... They must grab it and cherish it."
He added that once the conflict ends, "the strait will open up naturally."

- Israel's expanded death penalty laws targeting Palestinians criticised
- Date posted
- Description
- Israel's parliament has passed a law making the death penalty a default punishment for Palestinians convicted in military courts of deadly "acts of terrorism" against Israelis.
The law would apply to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
The legislation has drawn criticism from a number of Israeli politicians and humanitarian groups, as well as international rights groups.
Israeli human rights group B’tselem International Director Sarit Michaeli called the law "discriminatory", adding "Israeli Jews who live in the occupied territories, Israeli settlers, will not face any sort of death penalty in the rare occurrence that they might actually be tried or convicted of any sort of offences, and certainly not the killing of Palestinians".
The law would also technically apply to Jewish Israelis as the law stipulates attacks must be aimed at "ending Israel's existence", but critics say this is extremely unlikely.

- Will the excise cut help you save money on fuel?
- Date posted
- Description
- After weeks of pressure over surging petrol prices, the federal government has cut the tax on fuel in half.
It's a three month measure which will cost the budget $2.5 billion, part of the government's four-point plan to respond to the war in the Middle East’s impact on global fuel markets.
Brent crude oil prices are continuing to rise, and have surged around 60 per cent since the war began over a month ago.
Energy analysts say Australia is very vulnerable because it's at the very end of the fuel supply chain.
With the war likely to go for longer than expected, the key for government is to ensure fuel keeps coming into the country.

- Trump says US negotiating with 'very reasonable' new leaders in Iran
- Date posted
- Description
- United States President Donald Trump says the US and Iran have been meeting "directly and indirectly" and Iran's new leaders have been "very reasonable", as more US troops arrive in the region and Tehran warns it won't accept humiliation.
Trump's remarks on Sunday came after Pakistan, which is acting as an intermediary between Tehran and Washington, said it was preparing to host "meaningful talks" in the coming days aimed at ending the month-long Iran war.
"I think we'll make a deal with them, I'm pretty sure, but it's possible we won't," Trump told reporters on Sunday evening as he travelled aboard Air Force One to Washington.
Trump said he thought the US had already accomplished regime change in Tehran after strikes killed the country's supreme leader and other top officials, but said twice that their replacements seemed "reasonable".

- Albanese announces new fuel security powers
- Date posted
- Description
- The federal government will take on the financial risk of importing additional fuel and fertiliser as the war in the Middle East continues to drive up.
The powers will allow Export Finance Australia, a government-backed financial institution, to support private companies purchasing additional fuel cargoes from overseas.
When Export Finance Australia "underwrites" a purchase, it essentially promises to cover the financial risk if something goes wrong.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the new powers on Saturday, saying the move was about being "over prepared" rather than responding to an immediate crisis.

- Sperm whales observed assisting a calf's birth
- Date posted
- Description
- Researchers may have recorded the first evidence of marine animals practising midwifery.
Using footage and audio captured by drones, underwater hydrophones, and ship-based photography, Project CETI researchers recorded one of the most detailed observations of a sperm whale birth in the wild.
Scientists observed that the mother, 'Rounder', was surrounded by a tightly packed group of other female sperm whales during and after the 33-minute birth.
Within a minute of the newborn calf entering the water, members of the group appeared to coordinate diving and lifting movements to help raise the calf to the surface of the Caribbean Sea, where it took its first breath.
By analysing captured footage, audio, and almost two decades of prior research on this group of whales, scientists identified that Rounder's own mother provided support during her labour. Her half-sister and aunt stayed close to the new mother after the birth.
