- Description
- Opposition leader Angus Taylor said 1,700 visa holders from Gaza presented "a high risk" to Australia during the unveiling of the Coalition's immigration policy on Tuesday and argued the group "must be reassessed entirely".
Former immigration deputy secretary Abul Rizvi told SBS that Palestinians from Gaza who had been granted visas had "probably more checking and any cohort that has ever entered Australia in its history".
Rizvi says he has not seen any evidence from Taylor that "ASIO has fallen down on the job" when it comes to assessing the visas, nor why he believes a "recheck" would "change the outcomes".
Taylor used his first major policy speech as Opposition leader to argue Australia's migration system has been exploited by "self-serving" arrivals, proposing a hardline crackdown that includes social media vetting, tougher deportation measures and a stricter test of national values.
Taylor's speech comes as the Coalition faces in...

- Hungary's Viktor Orbán concedes landmark defeat after 16 years in power
- Date posted
- Description
- Hungary’s veteran nationalist leader Viktor Orbán has conceded a “painful but clear” defeat after a landslide election victory by the opposition Tisza party and its leader Péter Magyar.
Orbán, a eurosceptic, carved out a model of an “illiberal democracy” seen as a blueprint by Trump’s Make America Great Again movement and its admirers in Europe.
But many Hungarians have grown increasingly weary of Orbán after years of economic stagnation, soaring living costs and reports of oligarchs close to the government amassing more wealth.
A Tisza victory could open the way for reforms that the party says would aim to combat corruption and restore the independence of the judiciary and other institutions.
However, the extent of such reforms will depend on whether Tisza can secure the two-thirds constitutional majority needed to reverse much of Orbán’s legacy.

- Australians sail to Gaza on board Global Sumud flotilla to break Israel's blockade and deliver aid
- Date posted
- Description
- Seventeen Australians are setting sail to Gaza as part of the latest Global Sumud Flotilla - a convoy of approximately 100 ships aiming to break Israel's naval blockade and deliver 500 tonnes of humanitarian aid.
Since the ceasefire in Gaza began last October, the UN and various groups have reported that aid delivery has been hampered by ongoing Israeli airstrikes, weather events and tightened restrictions, leaving tens of thousands of Palestinians without adequate access to water, soap, food, medical supplies or cooking fuel.
The Israeli military maintains it is acting "in accordance with the ceasefire agreement", adding forces will "continue to operate to remove any immediate threat".
Six months ago, Israeli authorities intercepted a smaller flotilla of 40 vessels and 400 activists, including Australian activist Julie Lamont and Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg.
This time around, the Department of Foreign Affairs has warned of the ...

- Melania Trump denies ties to Epstein, calls for Congress to uncover the truth
- Date posted
- Description
- US first lady Melania Trump has responded to allegations about her connections with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, saying she's "never been friends" with him.
She also called on US Congress to hold a public hearing centred on survivors of Epstein’s crimes, with a chance to testify before politicians and have their stories entered into the congressional record.
Jeffrey Epstein died in a New York jail cell in 2019 before he could be tried on sex trafficking charges. He was convicted in 2008 of soliciting sex from girls as young as 14.
Despite being a convicted sex offender, files on Epstein released by the US justice department show he maintained connections with high-profile figures across the world.

- White House defends Trump's 'whole civilisation will die' threat
- Date posted

- Description
- White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has defended United States President Donald Trump's "very serious" threat to Iran, in which he said a "whole civilisation will die, never to be brought back again".
"I don't want that to happen, but it probably will," Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday.
Leavitt told reporters it was a "very, very strong threat ... that led the Iranian regime to cave to their knees and ask for a ceasefire and agree to reopening the Strait of Hormuz".
After a day on the brink, Trump abruptly reversed his threats — which experts say could have amounted to war crimes — and announced a Pakistani-mediated truce agreement just two hours before a deadline he had set for Iran to open the blockaded Strait of Hormuz.

He said Israel's military would pursue Hezbollah wherever it was.
Most of Wednesday's strikes were in civilian-populated areas, Israel's military said. Hours before the attacks, the military had issued warnings for some areas of southern Beirut and southern Lebanon.
No such warning was given for central Beirut, which was also hit.
