- US secretary of state Marco Rubio acknowledged he faces a delicate mission this week, pitching Washington’s Iran peace deal to Gulf Arab leaders who fear excessive concessions will strengthen Tehran and reshape the region’s security balance and oil flows.
The US’ top diplomat arrived in the United Arab Emirates late on Tuesday and was due to travel in the coming days to Kuwait and Bahrain, where he will meet officials from the Gulf Cooperation Council, a grouping of monarchies that also includes Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman.
At issue are elements of a draft agreement that includes no limits on Iran’s ballistic missiles, a proposed US$300 billion ($434 billion) reconstruction fund and provisions that could expand Iran’s regional influence and control over critical oil shipping lanes.
He said he would not ask regional allies to contribute to any reconstruction fund during the trip, even as the MoU suggests that countries in the region woul...

De la Espriella's opponent, left-wing candidate Ivan Cepeda, promised to continue the policies of outgoing president Gustavo Petro.
The result furthers a shift toward the right for countries across Latin America, in a reversal of the region's so-called pink tide which saw several left-wing governments brought to power in the early 2020s.

- UK prime minister Keir Starmer has announced he will resign, with a new leader to be in place by the time parliament returns in September.
The decision paves the way for the UK to have its seventh leader in 10 years.
Less than two years after he won a landslide election victory that promised to end chaos in British politics, Starmer said it was clear that his party wanted him to go.
He said nominations for anyone to replace him would open on 9 July.
However Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester who recently won the seat of Makerfield at a byelection, is the clear frontrunner.
"The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election, I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace," Starmer said.

Both Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a renewed ceasefire, a US official said on Saturday.
Iran on Sunday said it closed the Strait of Hormuz again, citing what it called Israeli "crimes" in Lebanon and a US violation of commitments to establish a ceasefire. Though, the United States insists the vital waterway remains open.

- Socceroo Jackson Irvine says he supports FIFA’s rule change around mouth covering after Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron became the first player to be sent off over the new rule introduced earlier this year.
The Paraguayan midfielder was given a straight red card in first-half stoppage time for putting his hand over his mouth in a confrontation with Türkiye’s Mert Muldur.
FIFA introduced the change to help combat racism and discrimination on the pitch. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said of the new rule, “If you do not have something to hide, you don’t hide your mouth when you say something”.

- Description
- Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has accused Donald Trump of fabricating a story about her after the US President told an Italian network that she "begged" him for a photo at the G7 summit earlier this month.
"Donald Trump's statements are completely made up ... I am frankly astonished," she said in an Instagram video.
"It is disappointing that he does not show the same determination with the enemies of the West and of the United States, whose leaders he instead treats with far greater indulgence."
Italian TV channel La7 reported — through translation — that Trump said: "She begged me to take a picture with her ... she wanted a picture with me so badly."
"I wouldn't have taken it, but I felt sorry for her."
Meloni was once a vocal supporter of Trump and the only European leader to attend his inauguration in 2025, however, she later distanced herself from him after criticising his comments directed at Pope Leo XIV...

But his journey began far from the pitch, shaped by conflict and survival.
Zandinan was just 12 years old when the self-proclaimed Islamic State group attacked the Yazidi community in Sinjar, Iraq, killing and kidnapping thousands.
After being held captive for almost two years, Zandinan and his family fled through the desert in a “do or die” moment.
After eventually settling in Toowoomba, Queensland, he found a way forward through football and is inspiring others in his community.

- Description
- Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has sent a message of support to the Socceroos following their defeat to the US at the FIFA World Cup, saying the team "certainly gave everything on the field there in Seattle" and that the country is "proud" of them.
Talking about the moment one of the match referees went down with a cramp and was helped out by the players, Albanese said: "It was something I haven't seen before".
"We look forward to the game against Paraguay and to us qualifying through to the next round ... so to (Socceroos coach) Tony Popovich and all of the Socceroos, well done," he said.
With the USA now likely topping group D, Australia could remain in second or slip to third, depending on the result between Türkiye and Paraguay. The final standings will then be decided in the final group matches.
Their win against Türkiye has made it more likely that they will still get out of the group stage, with one game left to play.

- Mexico have taken advantage of a defensive blunder by South Korea to win 1-0 and become the first team to advance to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The result leaves Mexico on six points, qualifying as Group A winners. They will face the Czech Republic at the Estadio Azteca on Wednesday, while South Korea, on three points, face South Africa in Monterrey.
Canada claimed a 6-0 victory over Qatar — its first-ever World Cup win.
Canadian Jonathan David bagged a hat-trick and lifted the co-hosts ahead of Switzerland at the top of Group B.
The win came at a price, however, as Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné was carried off the pitch with a suspected broken left leg after a challenge by Assim Madibo early in the second half that earned Madibo a red card and reduced Qatar to nine men.

- Displaced families across southern Lebanon have been returning to their homes following the signing of a peace deal between the US and Iran.
While the 14-point memorandum of understanding signed by the US and Iran dictates "the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon", some Lebanese are sceptical that the fighting will end soon.
Hours after the countries signed their agreement on Thursday, an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon killed one person.
Israel also published a map on Thursday showing an expanded military control zone in southern Lebanon, saying it would not rule out carrying out attacks beyond it — challenging the terms of the US-Iran pact.
"On our border, it is still active, it doesn't quiet down ... I compare Israel and Hezbollah to Tom and Jerry, it doesn't stop," one displaced resident said.
