Speaking in front of the inquiry, Berger shared that his children began feeling unsafe and uncomfortable in their own home after a swastika was graffitied on their back fence in December 2024.
During the Bondi terror attack, when gunmen opened fire on Jewish Australians celebrating Hanukkah and killed 15 people, two of his "children were home alone and they completely panicked".
"My middle son called his best friend because he was so terrified he didn't feel safe in our home ... I felt that I had failed as a parent," Berger told the inquiry while in tears.
The Bondi terror attack and its aftermath have continued to ripple across the country, from the streets to the parliament.

- Description
- Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey has faced backlash over the racial diversity of its cast as well as the lack of Greek actors.
Vrasidas Karalis, a professor in Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies at the University of Sydney, says that controversy overlooks the "universality" of the roughly 1,500-year-old poem, and more broadly, the "Greek tradition", adding that it's "not a national myth, or even a nationalistic myth".
"It's a human myth, a myth about our humanity, our desire to go back home - and that's a universal desire, to go back home," Karalis told SBS News.
Karalis said he believes there's no "racial element" in the original poem.
"Today, we have these cultural wars about race, and we're trying to incorporate them into these old myths, where they didn't exist in the intellectual horizon, this idea that there are superior and inferior races," Karalis said.

All other venues are in the design or planning and approvals stage.
Despite this, officials are confident the deadline will be met, with Queensland Premier David Crisafulli saying: “I’ve always believed that we have the time, the skills, to deliver a world-class event, and to do it on time and on budget.”

Danon said Mamdani's threat had "no legal basis" as the US is not a member of the ICC, later dismissing it as "political theatre" and a distraction from the NYC mayor's "own failures".

- The Iran-backed Houthi rebels have announced a maritime ban on Saudia Arabian shipping in the Red Sea, a move that could further strain global energy supplies.
When fighting with the US intensified last week, Iran's Revolutionary Guard asked its Houthi allies to stand ready to close the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait — compounding the impact of its effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Tit-for-tat strikes between the US and Iran have continued for a tenth night.
And there are warnings of wider escalation — with the Houthis and Riyadh threatening each other with force.

SBS News asked Hanson at a press conference whether she stood by her comments in 2017 praising Putin as a leader who had gained the respect of his country.
During the 2017 ABC Insiders interview, Hanson described Putin as a "patriotic" leader who was "doing so well for his country".
She also questioned his involvement in the downing of flight MH17, asking: "Have you got the proof he did it? Did he push the button?"
When asked about the comments on Tuesday, Hanson said: "I don't like what Putin has done in the invasion of Ukraine. I'm totally opposed to that."

It’s part of testing for the government's new AusAlert system, which will inform people about emergencies in their area, including natural disasters, public safety threats and biosecurity incidents.
But there are increasing concerns the alert could put victim-survivors of family and domestic violence with hidden phones at risk.
Advocates fear that government warnings about the alert may not reach women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in time.

Earlier, Joyce defended Hanson’s decision to meet with Robinson, saying: “I don’t think Pauline went over there with a ... bio on Tommy Robinson.”
Joyce suggested that “Tommy Robinson would not exist if there wasn’t such a fracture, such a hate within English society”.
7.30 host Sarah Ferguson also suggested that Joyce’s “decision to defect to One Nation” was dragging him “further into a place of intolerance and racial discrimination”.
“You’re defending your leader, but are you really comfortable with where she’s taking you?“, she asked.
Joyce started to answer before yelling at the dog, which could be heard barking throughout — although the audio seemed ...

- Andy Burnham has succeeded Keir Starmer as the United Kingdom's prime minister, pledging to bring stability to the country’s politics while declaring his premiership will be a "circuit breaker for Britain".
Burnham — the former mayor of Manchester — has become the UK's seventh prime minister in a decade and has said his plan involves heavy decentralisation, even at the heart of government, pledging to work the majority of his week away from Downing Street in a so-called ‘Number 10 of the North’ in Manchester.
He also said his government will focus heavily on domestic issues — a big change from his predecessor, who was considered an effective leader on the international stage but less so at home. Experts say the change in leadership could impact the UK's investment in defence but is unlikely to impact AUKUS.

- United States President Donald Trump has reassured Benjamin Netanyahu that he will not face arrest in New York City after mayor Zohran Mamdani raised the possibility on a New York Times podcast.
Mamdani said he is reviewing whether his administration could arrest the Israeli prime minister if he visits New York in September for the UN General Assembly.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for the Israeli leader in November 2024 over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
Speaking to the New York Times, Mamdani said he believes that “Netanyahu belongs in The Hague”, adding: “He’s a war criminal who has been charged ... and what you will find is that is an opinion that is held by many, purely because of what his actions have wrought over these past many years.”
Israel denies allegations of war crimes and has previously rejected the ICC’s jurisdiction, describing the warrant as “bogus”.
