- A Nigerian mother, Hauwa’u Abubakar, has cried out over the continued detention of her son, Adam Abubakar, by the Department of State Services (DSS) for about two years without trial, access to family, or formal charges.
According to multiple sources and documents obtained by SaharaReporters, Adam Abubakar was arrested by DSS operatives in Taraba State and secretly transferred to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, where he has allegedly remained in detention without being taken before any court of law.
The distraught mother, who is currently in Abuja seeking justice, said she has repeatedly written to the DSS headquarters, pleading to be allowed to see her son, but all her efforts have so far been ignored.
A source who was previously detained by the DSS and later released told SaharaReporters that Adam Abubakar was his cellmate while in custody.
The source further disclosed that while he was in detention, DSS officials accused Ad...

- Nigeria Allocates ₦204bn For Sports In 2026; ₦49.3bn Is For Anniversaries, What Are We Celebrating?

- Description
- In Nigeria’s 2026 Federal Budget, the National Sports Commission (NSC) was allocated about ₦203.6 billion to fund the country’s sports sector. This is a substantial increase compared with previous years and reflects a government effort to revive and expand sports development
The sharp rise between 2025 and 2026 reflects both continued expansion and new line items added to the sports budget.
The 2026 budget line for "Anniversaries and Celebrations” amounts to about ₦49.3 billion, making it the single largest item in the NSC’s capital expenditures. This allocation has raised questions because it is significantly higher than traditional sport development items, including research and facility upgrades.
However, the NSC has not publicly detailed exactly which anniversaries or celebrations this covers.

- Kudirat Abiola: 30 Years After, Supreme Court Dismisses Murder Case; Al-Mustapha Acquitted

- Description
- Almost 30 years after the bullets that silenced Alhaja Kudirat Abiola on the streets of Lagos, Nigeria’s highest court has finally brought the long, tortuous legal journey surrounding her assassination to an end.
The Supreme Court has quietly closed the chapter on one of the country’s most symbolic murder trials, dismissing all remaining attempts to revive the prosecution of Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd.), former Chief Security Officer to late military ruler, General Sani Abacha. The decision effectively frees Al-Mustapha for good and ends a case that has outlived regimes, governments, and generations of Nigerians.
The apex court’s ruling was not about who ordered the killing, nor did it reopen the painful questions that have trailed Nigeria’s darkest years of military rule. Instead, it hinged on something far more procedural—and damning: the failure of the Lagos State Government to act.
As the nation moves on, the name Kudirat Abiola r...

- Description
- A SaharaReporters review of the Borno State 2025 full-year budget performance document has revealed that the state government spent N4.3 billion on “livelihood support for Repentant Boko Haram members” during the year.
The document shows that N1.6 billion of the amount was disbursed between October and December 2025 alone, representing spending over a three-month period.
In contrast, the total capital expenditure for the Borno State Primary Healthcare Development Board for the entire 2025 fiscal year stood at N2 billion, over N2 billion less than what was spent on the livelihood support programme for former insurgents.
Similarly, capital expenditure for the Borno State University Teaching Hospital in 2025 was N2.7 billion, also lower than the amount spent on the reintegration programme. The capital expenditure of the state's hospital management board stood only at N3.1 billion in the 2025 fiscal year, less than the N4.3 billion spent on rehabi...

- At the resumed hearing of the UK corruption trial involving former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, prosecutors on Thursday presented what they described as a substantial body of documentary and digital evidence before Southwark Crown Court.
The prosecution told the court that materials placed on the record included transcripts of audio recordings, WhatsApp communications, emails, and correspondence allegedly recovered during searches conducted by the National Crime Agency and the Metropolitan Police at properties linked to the defendant.
During the proceedings, prosecutors outlined a number of allegations said to arise from the seized materials, emphasising that these matters form part of the prosecution’s case and remain subject to judicial determination.
Among the issues referred to in open court were claims attributed to oil executive Olatimbo Ayinde, suggesting that individuals associated with businessman Ko...

- Several teenagers were allegedly brutalised by police officers in the Yaba area of Lagos State after they were accosted while returning to their tutorial centre in the early hours of Thursday, sparking outrage on social media and renewed calls for police accountability.
An eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity said the teenagers had stepped out briefly from their tutorial centre to buy items from a nearby roadside shop commonly known as an “aboki,” which usually operates late into the night.
According to the witness, police officers, later identified as operatives from Alade Police Station in Shomolu, Yaba, suddenly confronted the teenagers and attempted to force them into a patrol vehicle.
The witness alleged that the officers repeatedly beat the teenagers, sprayed them with pepper spray and even urinated on them.

- TEARING IT DOWN: Lagos Govt's Demolition Dilemma Of Legality And Morality

- Description
- Lagos state currently faces a recurring dilemma, how to deal with informal and low income settlements that lack formal planning approval, infrastructure, and services. While policy documents often speak about urban renewal and slum upgrading, practice on the ground frequently takes the form of demolition and eviction. Nigerian law accommodates both approaches, but under clearly defined conditions.
The Land Use Act, 1978 is the foundation of land administration in Nigeria. Section 1 vests all land in a state in the Governor, to be held in trust for the people. Sections 5 and 6 empower the Governor to grant statutory rights of occupancy.
Section 28 allows the Governor to revoke a right of occupancy for overriding public interest, including urban development, infrastructure, or town planning purposes.
In Lagos State, this power is operationalised through state level planning and urban renewal laws, meaning the state can legally take land for redevelo...

- Corps members serving in Kogi State have accused the state National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) authorities of allegedly deceiving them into attending a political rally in support of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Ahmed Ododo under the guise of a youth empowerment program.
SaharaReporters gathered that the incident took place on Sunday, January 25, 2026.
According to multiple corps members who spoke to SaharaReporters on Monday, they received an official-looking circular, purportedly issued by the State Coordinator of NYSC, inviting all corps members in Lokoja, Obajana, Kabba Junction, and other parts of the state to attend a “general meeting” as part of a Kogi State Organised Youth Program.
However, the circular gave no specific agenda, only instructing attendees to dress in their NYSC “mofty” (mufti) uniforms and report to Muhammadu Buhari Square at 9:30 am.
The circular read in part: “I am directed to inform all Corps ...

SaharaReporters gathered that the applicants are currently camped at the Hajj Camp in Ilorin, situated around the Ilorin West Local Government Area Secretariat in Wara, Ilorin, Kwara State, where screening and preliminary training exercises are being conducted.
However, dozens of shortlisted applicants who spoke to SaharaReporters said they were shocked to discover that their names were removed from the recruitment list and replaced with individuals described as loyalists of influential APC chieftains and key figures within the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
According to the aggrieved applicants, the recruitment process was initially ...
