- Lawmakers and journalists are getting ready to take the stage for that most American of showdowns: a spelling bee. And the public may not get another chance to see such a spectacle for a century.
One hundred years ago, the National Press Club organized a similar spelling bee, pitting members of Congress against Beltway reporters. In 1913, President Wilson attended, a member of his Cabinet moderated and an Ohio congressman won. Now the lawmakers have a chance to solidify their supreme spelling skills; the journalists have a shot at redemption.
On Sept. 18, 2013, the Press Club is reprising the "Best Speller in the United States" competition, to celebrate Washington, D.C., history, promote education and raise money for the club's non-profit Journalism Institute. Merriam-Webster will provide the words and the pronouncer. Washington satirist Mark Russell will make a special appearance. (And yes, tubers will likely get a mention early in the competition.)

"A virus anywhere is just a plane ride away," Frieden said, and "most of our seafood, fruits and vegetables, and our medication supply comes from other countries."

- The National Press Club Softball Team wrapped up their second straight division title over the weekend of June 29 and advanced to the second day of the Metropolitan Media Softball League playoffs for the first time in team history.
The team, a 3-seed in the MMSL playoffs, defeated 6-seed USA Today and 2-seed Washington Post on Sunday to keep their postseason alive.
With Sunday's wins, they improved to 14-4 on the season and will play top-seeded Comcast Sports Net at 9am on Saturday, July 13 at Cabin John Regional Park as they continued an attempt at their first-ever championship.

As the press in most western democracies has had to retrench in recent years, cutting staffs and abandoning foreign (and domestic) bureaus, there is one bright spot for foreign coverage: Al Jazeera, CCTV and Voice of Russia Radio have vibrant bureaus in Washington and elsewhere. However, their growth has also caused considerable heartburn, because all are at least partially funded by governments not known for their respect for press freedom.
