- Chickadees are out, pine trees are in. With Maine’s iconic license plates retiring, what are drivers to do with their old plates? Secretary of State Shenna Bellow suggested drivers “keep a plate for posterity’s sake in their barn or their home if they really want a memento.” Here’s what our team is doing with theirs.
In May 2025, the State of Maine discontinued the bird plates. The change was spurred by safety concerns that Maine’s older plates have deteriorated beyond the point of recognition. The standard chickadee plates started being used in 1999, and while most states cycle out license plates every five to 10 years, Maine does not.
What will you do with your old plates? Tell us in the comments.

- Some 60 people lined up with Morrill volunteer firefighter David White to salute the procession for fallen firefighter Andrew Cross, 27. It was an emotional scene.
"Everybody," volunteer firefighter David White shouted as the procession neared. "Please stand at attention and salute!"
The crowd raised their hands to their brows as dozens of firetrucks, police cruisers and first responders slowly and silently rolled by.
Many who had gathered there were volunteer firefighters from Morrill and surrounding communities. Some broke down in tears as the hearse passed by the department.
"It's been an incredible show of support," said Morrill firefighter Tom Fish. "All the local towns, all the fire departments, were there for the procession last night and they're here for it today."
"It's community," he added. "It's a strong community."
