- The way council tax debt is collected in England is set to change for the first time in more than 30 years.
From April 2027, missing a council tax payment won’t immediately trigger a demand for the full year’s bill. Instead, households will have 63 days to catch up, councils will be required to offer more manageable repayment plans, and council tax will be spread over 12 months rather than 10 to reduce monthly costs. Fees for chasing unpaid bills will also be capped at £100.
