- What's holding this South Bronx neighborhood back?
- Date posted
- Description
- Parts of Mott Haven in the South Bronx have been transformed over the last few years. Thousands of new apartments in luxury towers with all the amenities are now in what was once a mainly industrial area of the community. “You’re right on the waterfront. You could walk across the bridge and you are in Manhattan,” Columbia University Professor Rob Walsh said. Walsh is the former president of the Bronx Economic Development Corporation and a former commissioner for the city’s Small Business Services, also known as SBS. Although this has become a residential hot-spot in the last five years, Walsh said he is baffled by a few issues. He said the property owners and the city have allowed the streets around Third Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard to remain dirty despite billions of dollars invested in housing.

- Can congestion pricing funds help clean up pollution in the Bronx?
- Date posted
- Description
- Efforts to reduce pollution in one of New York City’s most burdened neighborhoods are underway, funded in part by congestion pricing revenue. At Hunts Point Market in the Bronx, officials are targeting a major source of emissions: transport refrigeration units, or TRUs, which are used to keep produce cold. About 1,000 of the diesel-powered units operate at the market, often idling for hours and contributing to poor air quality. The state has set aside $15 million from congestion pricing toll revenue to replace the units with cleaner diesel, electric or hybrid models. The initiative is hoping to improve air quality in the south Bronx, which has the highest asthma hospitalization rates in the city.

The Council says it found $6 billion in savings and efficiencies and has blasted ideas like ending free Sunday meter parking or a property tax hike. Meanwhile, Mamdani says the city is facing a fiscal crisis and has pushed for higher taxes on wealthy earners and corporations, while warning the Council's proposal relies on unstable revenue and would result in a cut to crucial services. Investigative reporter Courtney Gross is joined by political reporters Kelly Mena and Dan Rivoli dig into the budget battle.

- Can City Council's $6 billion plan close NYC's budget gap?
- Date posted
- Description
- The City Council on Wednesday unveiled its own $6 billion savings plan to plug the city’s budget gap. City Council Speaker Julie Menin revealed the proposal as an alternative to Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s approach that calls for possible increased property taxes and dipping into the city’s savings. The plan aims to plug the hole by re-estimating the city’s costs and revenues. Menin said $3.5 billion can be saved through things like increasing the Department of Buildings' revenues by $80 million for permits and late fees and re-estimating the costs of city salaries to not fund vacant positions, which could save $860 million.

- How this Crown Heights family prepares for Passover
- Date posted

- As Jews across New York City begin observing Passover, families are taking part in traditions that go far beyond the dinner table. For eight days, those observing the holiday refrain from eating leavened grains such as wheat and oats, commemorating the biblical story of the Israelites’ exodus from slavery in Egypt, when they fled in haste and did not have time for their bread to rise. Instead, matzah — an unleavened bread — is eaten throughout the holiday. In the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights, Shmuly Rosenstein begins preparing weeks in advance.

Now there is a new life for the structure originally built as the headquarters for the New York Times at the turn of the 20th century — as a destination for tourists and New Yorkers seeking a unique view of the busy area. It’s 19 stories above the busy streets, for a heck of a view of the “Crossroads of the World.” The public hasn’t regularly visited the building in many years.

As assemblymen in Albany, they became good friends and often were confused for one another. But now they find themselves on opposite sides of a major issue affecting New Yorkers, with Burgos being CEO of the New York Apartment Association, an organization representing landlords of rent-stabilized apartments. Meanwhile, Mamdani vociferously campaigned for mayor last year on a platform of freezing New Yorkers’ rents.
Burgos joined Errol to talk about his relationship with the mayor, how he hopes to further his agenda despite an administration pushing for a rent freeze ,and why he believes a freeze would ‘break the system.’

- Bruce Blakeman calls Gov. Hochul 'comrade Kathy'
- Date posted
- Description
- Republican candidate for governor Bruce Blakeman says he “now affectionately calls the governor ‘comrade Kathy’” because of her association with Mayor Zohran Mamdani and added that he believes she has a “secret plan” to raise taxes on the middle class.
A spokesperson for Gov. Hochul responded in a statement, saying “While Bruce Blakeman can’t stop touting Trump’s illegal tariffs that make everything from groceries to clothing more expensive,” the governor has “lowered costs for New Yorkers at every opportunity,” including “cutting middle-class taxes to their lowest rate in 70 years.”
Hochul has repeatedly said she doesn’t back Mamdani’s plan to increase taxes on the rich and large corporations.

- Why the city's response about 9/11 air quality records raises questions for lawyers
- Date posted
- Description
- For nearly three years, a couple of lawyers have been waiting for the mayor’s office to respond to a public records request for city documents about air quality and liability concerns in lower Manhattan after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. They got their answer a few weeks ago, and they tell NY1 it just raises more questions. The mayor's office and law department both told Andy Carboy they would not be turning over any records, according to a February letter. However, NY1 has a copy of a 2001 memo that laid out potential liability the city could face in the wake of the attacks.
