- Storm Surge Virtual Reality Simulation
- Date posted
- Description
- Storm surge has historically been a leading cause of direct hurricane fatalities. To better visualize the life-threatening impacts of storm surge, a virtual reality (VR) simulation was created, immersing a user inside a home with devastating storm surge. It shows the life-threatening impact of water entering a house and surrounding a user with debris and furniture. This video shows what the virtual reality simulation looks like for those that do not have access to a virtual reality headset.
Information about downloading the VR simulation for a VR headset is available at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/surge/resources.php
Before the hurricane season starts, check if you are in a storm surge evacuation zone. During the hurricane season, if storm surge is forecast for your area, follow local evacuation orders to stay safe.
This simulation was developed in partnership with researchers at the University of Georgia and Clemson University.
