- Description
- As we head deeper into fall, the atmosphere becomes more dynamic as the upper level jet stream strengthens from larger temperature gradients. Here is an animation of water vapor imagery from satellite from Thursday afternoon until 8 pm Friday evening. The imagery is showing the flow of moisture through the upper atmosphere, above 20,000 feet. The dark blues and yellows depict dry air, while the whites and greens depict deeper moisture. The moisture flow follows the jet stream and there are three systems to note. The first system is a large low pressure that moved over the Tri-State Thursday is now offshore. Second, is a band of deeper moisture from the Gulf of Mexico all the way up into Canada. This is also associated with the cold front that will move through on Saturday. Third, is a larger "U" shape to the moisture pattern across the central U.S. racing eastward. This is a deep trough in the jet stream, that will send the cold front and showers across the region Saturday. This trough...

- Here is an interesting radar animation over southeast Connecticut this evening. Pay close attention to the radar echoes (in green and yellow) near Deep River, Essex, and North Lyme. They congeal into a circular pattern around the Connecticut River and disappear quickly as the sun sets. These echoes are not from precipitation, but from tree swallows that roost along the river at night this time of year. We have shown in previous posts when they take flight at sunrise. Here, they are returning to their favorite location for the night.
