- Description
- The legacy GOES water vapor satellite imagery shows the center of the upper level low pressure system to the southwest of New Mexico on May 9, 2017. Deep southerly flow ahead of this system combined with afternoon heating and instability spawns a large area of thunderstorms over central NM. The deeper moisture associated with these storms can be seen in the white colors while drier air wrapping into the system is shown by the darker orange colors. These storms shift east and become discrete supercells and large clusters through the evening hours. The video resolution can be improved to 1080HD by clicking on the settings gear on the bottom right of the video display.

- Description
- The maximum estimated hail size loop shows where the multi-radar multi-sensor radar algorithm detects storms producing hail. There are several storms that show green shading which indicates hail in the quarter to half dollar size. Note the hail storm crossing the I-25 corridor near San Felipe and Kewa pueblos toward the beginning of the loop, another along U.S. Highway 84 south of Las Vegas near Anton Chico, and another crossing Roswell later in the loop. The most significant hail fell near Clovis where the maximum estimated hail size was greater than 2 inches. Many other storms produced pea to penny size hail throughout the day. The video resolution can be improved to 1080HD by clicking on the settings gear on the bottom right of the video display.

- Sandia "Waterfall" Stratus May17, 2016
- Runtime
- 0:27
- Date posted
- Description
- Looking northeast from the NWS Albuquerque office on Tuesday, May 18, 2016, this time-lapse photography captured the effects of a strong cold front that delivered unseasonably cool temperatures as well as showery weather to the Albuquerque Metro. Gusty east canyon winds (a.k.a. gap winds) often accompany these types of fronts and also result in "waterfall" stratus clouds, as the colder air mass deepens to the east of the Sandia Mountains and spills westward into the Rio Grande Valley. The cooler air mass was not deep enough to reach Sandia Crest that rises to just over 10,000 ft. MSL.

- Description
- During January-February 2007, a series of winter storms hit portions of central and northern New Mexico. Electronic Technicians from the NWS Albuquerque office often head out to the Clines Corners Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), which is among the most impacted sites during a winter storm given its wind prone location. The deep snow in early 2007 proved especially impactful. The techs had to return to the site numerous times to dig out and remove snow from the numerous sensors.

- Bird Freed From AWPAG Sensor
- Runtime
- 2:16
- Date posted
- Description
- When our forecasters and/or a concerned citizen calls to indicate that an Automated Surface Observation System (ASOS) is reporting Tsunami conditions in New Mexico, NWS Albuquerque Electronic Technicians jump into action. Birds often land on the edge of the precipitation gauge and occasionally jump in to feed on bugs and other insects that collect inside the sensor. Unfortunately, sometimes, they can't get out. The Roswell ASOS is a 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive from the NWS Albuquerque office! So a "stuck" bird can be trapped for a long period of time and by the time we reach the site, it has lost nearly all of its strength trying to get free.

Watch as we review the threats of flash flooding and dive into the specifics of urban flash flooding and the dangers of arroyos and flood channel diversions throughout Albuquerque. Lieutenant Chris Carlsen of the Albuquerque Fire Department joins us and shares his perspective as a firefighter, often called to perform swift water rescue deployments during flash flooding events.

- 2014 Monsoon Season: A Picture Slide Show
- Runtime
- 5:49
- Date posted
- Description
- "Monsoon" is defined as a seasonal shift in the winds. In New Mexico and the greater Southwest region of America, this refers to an absence of westerly winds in the upper troposphere. An artifact, or end result, of this seasonal lack in westerly winds aloft is an increase in subtropical moisture into New Mexico. This leads to increased showers, thunderstorms, lightning, flooding, and downburst winds across the region. Watch as we showcase some pictures of the 2014 monsoon season.
