- Democrat Andy Beshear has twice won election as governor of Kentucky — thriving in a state that has voted for Donald Trump three times.
Now Beshear is considering a run for president. He discussed what he believes Democrats need to change in an NPR all-platform interview, which included a special podcast episode, as well as reports on the Up First podcast and Morning Edition.
Beshear has a lower national profile than another contender, California's Gavin Newsom. He's also less well known than some previous guests in the NPR interview series — JB Pritzker, Pete Buttigieg and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. But he has a credential others lack: winning statewide in a very red state. (A red commonwealth, to be exact; it's the Commonwealth of Kentucky.) In a party eager for new leadership, he is 47.
Kentucky Republicans dismiss his success as a quirk: The son of a popular former governor, Beshear won races in 2019 and 2023, which were not presidential el...

And money is coming in, more than $30 billion a month so far. Eight months into Trump's second term, it’s unclear what the larger impact of these tariffs will have on the economy. Despite that, the president keeps promising to roll out new ones. NPR's chief economics correspondent Scott Horsley explains.

- The Trump administration is telling pregnant women not to use acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, to avoid having kids with autism — despite the fact that medical groups say there’s no clear evidence showing a causal link.
The National Institutes of Health also recently awarded more than $50 million in research grants to explore the roots of autism. The director of the NIH, Jay Bhattacharya, says the new grants will help scientists consider the effect of environmental and medical factors — everything from nutrition to pollutants.
He says past NIH research on autism has not given families the answers they wanted. The NIH did, however, fund one very large study looking at acetaminophen use in pregnancy and the risk of autism. It analyzed data from more than two million children in Sweden and found no connection.

Kirk played a key role in shifting young Americans to the right, which helped put Donald Trump back in the White House. What happens next?

- Illinois' billionaire governor: it's about values, not money
- Date posted
- Description
- President Trump on Monday said he intended to send National Guard troops to Memphis as part of what he says is an attack on crime. Trump added that he still hopes to send troops to Chicago, though it's unclear how he legally can do so. The news gives fresh relevance to our recent interview with Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, who has declined to ask for the military.
This interview with Pritzker, which took place last week in Chicago, was an opportunity to see him respond to an immigration enforcement surge in Chicago — and to hear from one of the governors who is thinking of a run for president.

- U.S. airstrike targets another small boat from Venezuela
- Date posted
- Description
- The U.S. has carried out another deadly airstrike on a small boat from Venezuela — the second time this month the U.S. has killed alleged drug traffickers.
President Trump posted a video of an airstrike on social media, saying the U.S. had “confirmed” the three people on a small boat in international waters were carrying drugs on board. Two U.S. officials who requested anonymity because they’re not authorized to speak publicly told NPR that Congress had been notified of the strike.
The previous strike on a Venezuelan boat killed 11 people who appeared to be heading back to shore.

- Israel stages rotting aid for influencers and journalists
- Date posted
- Description
- Israel has been trying to counter what it calls lies of starvation in Gaza so the Israeli army took a group of journalists to the main crossing into the Gaza strip, Kerem Shalom. They were taken to a parking lot where abandoned aid sat rotting in the searing sun. An IDF spokesman claimed Israel is letting plenty of aid in but the UN and other aid groups are not distributing it.
However, Israel controls all the parameters of aid. The UN’s World Food Program told us aid was left this summer because it became too dangerous to deliver it without a military escort. More trucks have been getting through since August, but the UN says Israel still has too many restrictions for entry and the aid is a drop in the bucket of what’s needed.
Recently, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as influencers invited to the region by the Israeli Diaspora Ministry have put out videos echoing IDF claims that the starvation is fake. But video footage from NPR‘s produ...

- Gov. Hochul endorses Mamdani in NYC mayor's race
- Date posted
- Description
- New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is endorsing Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayor’s race.
Mamdani, who describes himself as a Democratic Socialist, won the Democratic mayoral primary in June, but some top Democratic leaders have kept their distance. Mamdani has been sharply critical of Israel’s war in Gaza and once endorsed the idea of defunding the NYPD, though he has walked back that stance.
In her endorsement in a New York Times essay, Hochul said she and Mamdani “had our disagreements,” but Hochul said Mamdani wants a safe affordable New York City. The governor also commended Mamdani, who is Muslim, for meeting with Jewish community leaders across the city.
