- Why China could emerge as a victor in the aftermath of the Midde East war | The Business | ABC NEWS
- Date posted
- Description
- As the global oil shock from the Middle East war reverberates through economies, China is proving its resilience. Westpac's head of international economics, Elliot Clarke says Beijing could be benefiting from this conflict. He says there are two main reasons, one is the nation's oil reserves, and the other is the growing global demand for China's green technology as the war in the Middle East pushes the drive to electrification. China's economy began the year in good health, with GDP growing annually at 5 per cent in the first quarter. Elliot Clarke says the data shows a long- awaited stabilisation in consumer demand and an end to the sharp decline in housing investment. China's property sector is a major driving force for demand for Australian commodities, including its biggest export iron ore. Elliot Clarke says the competition in that sector is heating up with various Asian countries stepping up to offer their exports to China.

- The discounts at Woolworths that are being challenged in court | The Business | ABC NEWS
- Date posted
- Description
- First it was Coles, now it rival, Woolworths is being accused by the competition watchdog of misleading customers over discounts on hundreds of items. The ACCC claims Woolworths broke its internal policies by placing 266 products on the 'Prices Dropped' promotion. It said the price establishment guideline is the length of time a product should remain on a price before being reduced. The case is focusing on 12 items, including an Oreo Family Pack that was sold at $3.50 for 696 days until late November 2022. It then spiked to $5.00 for 22 days before Woolworths put it on a "Prices Dropped" price of $4.50 - 29 per cent higher than the previous price. The court heard regular prices were on white labels, yellow tags indicated temporary specials. The ACCC's lead barrister Michael Hodge argued there was something special about the red-and-white design, which also displayed a WAS price. He said "the subtle magic of the 'Prices Dropped' message that draws the consumer in is to say the new...

They say turbo-charging the not-for-profit housing sector is critical to boosting supply, and reducing the growth of property prices.
Community Housing Industry Association NSW chief executive, Luke Achterstraat says the housing supply crisis is 'real' and 'deepening'. "I think a lot of investors are essentially speculating and expecting that capital gain to occur with a reduced tax rate rather than necessarily looking for high yielding income-driven investment," he says.
"I think there is some distortion that the discount creates...we would welcome government looking at that to maybe take...
