- The Gestalt Gardener - August 29, 2025
- Date posted
- Description
- We are counting down the days until Felder joins us back in the studio in a few weeks, but until then, he answers questions from England about weird worms in pecans, annoying rodents in birdseed, and interesting anecdotes concerning marigolds and tomatoes. Let's get dirty!
Each week, horticulturalist Felder Rushing shares stories, answers questions and just talks gardening. Of course, you’ll hear a bit of “cheesy music” in every program and you might hear a bad joke or two as well. The Gestalt Gardener is a long-time favorite on MPB Think Radio, due in no small part to Felder’s laid-back, your-neighbors-might-talk-but-so-what approach to gardening.
Email Felder anytime at garden@mpbonline.org and listen Friday mornings at 9 and Saturday mornings at 10 to The Gestalt Gardener on MPB Think Radio. And in the meantime, as Felder says, get out and get dirty.

- Description
- On Friday, Aug. 29, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, in coordination with the Mississippi National Guard and other partnering state agencies, hosts the 20th Anniversary Commemoration of Hurricane Katrina. The ceremony commemorates Hurricane Katrina's landfall on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and remembers the lives lost and the pain endured by the citizens of our great state.
During the state of emergency following Katrina’s landfall, agencies from throughout the state, National Guard units from across the country, and active duty and reserve service members from all branches of military service aided Mississippi in search and rescue operations and the rebuilding of communities devastated by the storm. Twenty years later, we remember and honor the lives lost, recognize the resilience of Mississippians, and reflect upon the national partnerships that helped us throughout our journey of recovery and hope.

- 20 Years After Hurricane Katrina
- Date posted
- Description
- When Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005, Mississippi’s Gulf Coast was brutally transformed. A towering 27 ft storm surge swept miles inland—decimating structures, homes, and ways of life across the gulf coast and for dozens of miles inland.
Economically, the storm devastated livelihoods. The Gulfport–Biloxi metro area’s unemployment soared to 24.3% and over 39.9 million cubic yards of debris were removed in the cleanup. The human cost was staggering. Mississippi lost at least 231 lives. Yet amid the wreckage, the spirit of Mississippi endured. Almost one million people came to volunteer between 2005-2010.
Every collapsed home, displaced family, and shattered street tells a story of loss. This is Mississippi’s enduring legacy: a state tested by the tide, yet unbowed.
