- Female Firsts with Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith | MPB
- Date posted
- Description
- Over the past one hundred years, women in Mississippi have been trailblazers, holding elected positions all across the state. Mississippians have seen women take on a more prominent role in government, both at the state level and nationally. Who knows what Mississippi women will accomplish in the future? Hosted by Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, the first female U.S. Senator from Mississippi.
---
Correction: There were actually two women elected to statewide offices before Evelyn Gandy was elected State Treasurer in 1959. Nellah Massey Baily was elected State Tax Collector in 1947 and Julia Henrich Kendrick was elected Supreme Court Clerk in 1963. Because neither of these positions are statewide elected offices today, they were missed in our research.
