She regularly faced threats of violence due to her work with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, but that didn’t stop her from fighting for voting rights and desegregation. She was elected mayor of Mayersville in 1976.

- After fighting in World War II, Medgar Evers graduated from Alcorn A&M University, married Myrlie Beasley, and moved to Mound Bayou. He joined the Regional Council of Negro Leadership and became the NAACP’s first field secretary of Mississippi. He challenged America to live up to its ideals of freedom, equality, and democracy until his tragic assassination in 1963.

- After serving in World War II, Aaron Henry returned to Clarksdale, committed to fighting for freedom at home. He organized the Clarksdale chapter of the NAACP and formed alliances with other civil rights organizations such as SNCC and CORE. He was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1979.
