- Speaking to a crowd of more than 6,000 at a Labor Day rally in Portland, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont railed against what he said is an oligarchy of billionaires exerting too much influence over America’s economy, politics and the media.
The event was part of Sanders' nationwide "Fighting Oligarchy" tour. He also used the event to effectively endorse the campaigns of two statewide candidates in Maine: former Senate President Troy Jackson, who is running for governor, and Graham Platner, an oysterman and Marine Corps veteran hoping to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins next year.
A political newcomer, Platner garnered national headlines several weeks ago when he joined the Democratic race for Collins' seat. Platner used his speech to criticize Collins and to echo Sanders' accusations that both political parties have adopted policies that largely benefit the wealthy at the expense of working Americans.

- With its historic buildings and working farm, the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in New Gloucester, Maine draws thousands of visitors a year. This is the last active Shaker community in the United States. And until a few months ago, there were only two members. Now a third has joined the celibate Christian sect.
59-year-old Sister April Baxter is unassuming in her colorful button down and jeans but has brought a palpable energy to the space. Baxter is the newest Shaker. She came to live at the village this spring and said the place was special from the first time she visited.
“I didn’t understand why, but I was very moved. I mean, I’ve been to lots of beautiful places in my life, lots of beautiful places, but something made me feel like I had to come back, and not just for a day,” Baxter said.

- A large great white shark was spotted on the morning of Monday, Aug. 11, in Saco Bay, near Scarborough Beach State Park and Higgins Beach, and again Tuesday morning off Pine Point Beach.
Marine Resource Officer Daryen Grenata says that in the drone footage obtained by the Scarborough Police Department, the shark appears to be 10-12 feet in length, and is not tagged.
There have been no additional confirmed sightings on Tuesday, but Grenata says it's likely the shark is still in the area.
"I'm not sure that I would get on a paddleboard and paddle a mile off shore — I'm not sure that I would go swimming that far out," Grenata said. "But they're here because there's food. They don't typically target a human, they're targeting other marine species. And we just wanted to make sure people were well aware of what was going on."
There are no beach closures in effect at this time, and Grenata says park rangers are monitoring the water closely...

- You’ve probably heard the viral statistic: we currently have enough clothing on the planet to outfit the next six generations. Whether or not this is actually true (people attribute the quote to the British Fashion Council, but we couldn’t trace the original data), it likely gets repeated so often because it feels true.
We’ve seen mountains of clothes in landfills, on beaches and filling abandoned lots, often abroad. We’ve seen the trend of “hauls” or “unboxing” videos on social media, where users try on piles of clothing, mostly fast fashion, for entertainment. We’ve heard that fashion is one of the most polluting industries, accounting for between 2%-10% of global emissions, and 20% of clean water pollution, all by itself. A 2018 study by UNICEF found that 85% of all discarded textiles go to the dump each year, which is frankly shocking.

- It’s one of the most popular shows on PBS. Antiques Roadshow, now in its 29th season, continues to shuttle its massive field production unit all over the United States, assessing the value of artifacts and heirlooms discovered in basements, barns and attics and capturing the stories behind them.
This week, for the first time, the show visited Maine. Three thousand people converged on the grounds of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay on Wednesday along with their personal treasures.
Of the thousands of items appraised on Wednesday, only about 30 will make it into each of the three episodes that will be produced from the Boothbay event. They will air next year starting in January.

- One of the oldest apple trees in North America discovered in Maine

- A couple of years ago, several apple historians sent leaf samples from this tree, along with hundreds of others, to a lab for genetic testing. Recently, they got the results back: this Maine tree is the only known living specimen of its kind in North America. The Drap d’Or is one of a few historic apples that are the genetic ancestors of many of the common varieties we eat today.
