- Mainers in several dozen towns gathered to rally Saturday as part of a national “No Kings” day of protests.
In Portland, a few thousand people gathered in Monument Square Saturday, and marched through the Old Port and onto Commercial Street.
Among them was Portland resident Janice Bailey, who has attended previous protests. This time, she says the U.S. and Israeli-led war in Iran prompted her to return to Monument Square.
“We don’t have an alternative, we have to be out on the streets,” she said. “We have to be letting the powers that be, and more importantly other citizens, our neighbors, that they’re not alone.”
Jackson Sewall said he’s also concerned about endless wars and military spending.
“Where that money could be going to people here, and making a better country,” he said.

Today, its new facility in Cape Neddick treats 2500 sick and injured creatures a year, with plans to handle a thousand more after an 11-year, $11 million expansion is completed.

- Two women from Maine are suing the Department of Homeland Security after being told they would be added to a "domestic terrorists" list for recording the activities of federal immigration agents. As Kevin Miller reports, the women claim agents engaged in unconstitutional surveillance and intimidation while they were exercising their First Amendment rights.
According the lawsuit filed Monday in federal court, the two Portland residents were lawfully observing and recording federal immigration agents during separate incidents last month. They allege that, in each incident, masked and unidentified agents responded by USING PHONES TO scan their faces and license plates .
The lawsuit filed by the group Protect Democracy claims that one agent told Hilton that if she kept quote "coming to things like this, you are going to be on a domestic terrorist watchlist. - Several tribal leaders confirmed that negotiations have been underway since November. Those talks already produced one breakthrough in a sometimes rocky relationship between Governor Janet Mills and the tribes. In January she allowed a bill to become law that gives them exclusive rights to operate internet gambling in Maine.
The move won her effusive praise from leaders of the Passamaquoddy Tribe, who wrote a recent opinion column in the Portland Press Herald crediting the governor for improving tribal relations. They specifically cited the internet gambling bill.
The column also contained a veiled reference to a separate column by Donna Loring, a Penobscot tribal elder who briefly served as the governor's tribal relations liaison during her first term. Loring was critical of the internet gaming deal, describing it as a "transaction" with the governor that traded sovereignty for the tribes' long sought quest for gambling rights that have been effectively block...
