Rather was an anchor at KHOU in Houston when the hurricane approached the Gulf of Mexico. After mapping the hurricane's path, Rather traveled to Galveston Island to cover the storm. There, he overcame high winds, flooding, and even poisonous snakes to cover the hurricane.
Along the way, he innovated how TV stations cover severe weather, and CBS News took notice.
